My bf got quoted 10k for filing K1 visa process in Atlanta. We are looking for other attorneys with more reasonable quote. Can you share your contacts?

Much appreciated

Unless you have a very unusual situation, you don't need an attorney. This site is a great resource for information and advice.

you do not need an attorney

many posts on here report that an attorney's office made mistakes on the petition causing issues

u need to understand

1. attorney collects needed documents from the USC ,  copies them , fills out the application (petition)

and mails it (USC does all the work)

2. attorney can not speed up the process

3.  attorney can not attend the interview in most countries and if can attend he /she is not allowed to answer any of the CO's questions

4.  unless stipulated in attorney /USC agreement   ,  they do not answer to any RFE or go to the next step to advise if a visa is denied

go to the guides above and read what is required

fill out your petition

and save yourself a ton of money

10 K is way too much/ its a normal amount for a work visa done by a company where there is needed a lot of supporting

but K1 or CR1  10 K is outrageous

While having a lawyer for our K-1 would have saved us major hassle, it would not have been worth $10K. The VJ guide didn’t warn us about our situation (what to do when the alien doesn’t have a birth certificate) and it would have been worth $2000 to me to have been advised before we let the embassy have a nearly irreplaceable document.

If you have a simple case you won’t need a lawyer for I-129F / K-1.  The problem is people new to the process don’t know what a simple case is.

Why would you need to use a lawyer?

I completed K1- N400 myself using solely this site  you can asks questions on this site as you have already done and receive great feedback

only reason you will need a lawyer is in unusual circumstances.

save yourself the added stress of paying and relaying on someone else to hopefully do what you pay them for and get it right

good luck on your journey!

You can do it yourself if you’re a detail-oriented person who follows instructions. The government forms for K-1 and the whole process afterwards are accompanied by official instructions. Forums like this one break all that down for you, besides the countless YouTube videos of people who’ve done it themselves. Unless your petition will require special waivers or you have convoluted situations, you can do it yourself. However, I understand some people might not be able to. As a rule of thumb, if you are a person who conscientiously prepares your taxes, keeps meticulous records of your receipts, and generally dots every i and crosses every t, you’ll be golden. Whereas, if you simply cannot be bothered with filling your taxes and going through the motions of Turbo Tax is excruciating, you might want to have help.

You do not need a attorney to do this unless you have in your paperwork that will be red flags.

In 2020, we had K-1 quotes from 3 law firms in San Francisco (a more expensive city than Atlanta) which were $1.8K, $2K, and $2.5K. The lawyer ended up being more of a hassle. We did most of the work. They introduced transcription errors multiple times that we had to fix. They were unfamiliar with local rules, e.g. police certificates, vaccination, etc. They were very late to forward consular notices to us. This would have delayed us by 2 months if we did not proactively e-mail the consulate after our Packet 3.

Given our experience, for our AOS, we filed ourselves without a lawyer using instructions on this site. Most people on VJ are DIY. If you are careful about reading instructions, you can do it yourself. We highlighted all instructions that did not apply to our case in a different color.

If DIY seems daunting or you lack the time due to a busy schedule, you might consider SimpleCitizen, which has automated software for generating your filing package. See here: https://simplecitizen.com/pricing/ . It costs $249. They will generate the package based on the data you enter in a web form and ship it to you for signature and mailing.
