A nation is not a nation without borders for the same reason your home is not a home without borders.

Americans have the right to decide who lives in the US, what arrangements they have with other countries (e.g. free flowing immigrant arrangements between parties), foreigners of a different nationality do not dictate this, just like people outside your home do not just decide on their own to live in your house without your permission, create their own enclaves, etc, it wouldn't be tolerated. The same applies here. Boundaries are necessary for freedom. Inside the boundaries of your home, you set who you want, the criteria, and you feel safe and secure. Others are obligated to respect that. If they don't, they clearly don't (and won't) respect you -- they are dangerous. So the idea that open borders is a good idea for a nation invites precisely that.. people who won't respect you, your laws, your customs, your culture. It's an awful idea. We see enough of that sort of nonsense even without open borders.

The "open borders" concept, whether in the home, or as a nation, is a mythological idea, it doesn't exist anywhere. It's as mythological as the OP's idea that they demolished anything.

When you think of the millions actually billions living in squalor in the rest of the world who would benefit from social housing, benefits etc it is a difficult to argue against it

Just think of the boost to the construction industry in building all that housing

We may as well totally get rid of the visa system, and allow everyone to come here on a passport and stay indefinitely.

Think of the advantages this would have compared to, say, the current fiancee visa system. We wouldn't have to worry about foreigners' pretending to love U.S. citizens so that they can get a visa. They would have no need to engage in deceit in order to come here, and so a lot of heartbreak, divorce, and related court battles would be eliminated.

At the same time, those who have good intentions would not have to deal with such a prolonged wait before coming here. Also, they would not have to worry so much about being abused or exploited due to their vulnerable situation; they could bring their whole family over and have that social support, so issues such as being battered or otherwise controlled by a U.S. citizen spouse, or having their passport taken away and forced into prostitution by some pimp, would be mitigated. Those who are currently unable to get a visa also would not have to pay a bunch of money to some mule to bring them across the border in unsafe conditions.

Open borders would benefit U.S. citizens as well because they would be at less risk of being accused of abusing immigrants when the circumstances would not make it as plausible that they acted that way, and when there would be less incentive for immigrants to make such claims for an immigration benefit. The current system exposes U.S. citizen sponsors to a lot of legal liability and makes them spend a lot of time and money dealing with red tape without any guarantee of getting the desired result. Immigration fraud will go down to zero when there's nothing to be fraudulent about in order to cross the border.

Public charge concerns could be eliminated by simply having a less generous welfare system. Allowing the immigrant's entire family to come over could help with that, by giving them a larger base of support in case they fall into poverty and need help. Also, granting blanket authorization to all immigrants to work would allow them to be productive immediately upon arrival.

Most of the objections people have to mass immigration could be dealt with through enforcement of existing laws. For example, people living 25 to a house could be remedied through stricter enforcement of local ordinances about maximum occupancies. Also, when illegal immigrants are given legal status here, they can begin paying taxes and thereby supporting social services such as hospitals and schools, making them less of a burden on the cities and states in which they live. If, despite all that help, they still can't survive here, they can always go back to their home country, where the costs of living are lower. Poverty, although unpleasant, should not be a reason for anyone to starve in a world where farmers have so much excess produce that they have to send it to the third world just to prevent it from going to waste.

Some might say, there are some immigrants who don't assimilate into American culture; but that doesn't really matter, since they tend to stay in their own enclaves anyway, given that the same insularity that makes them not want to learn our culture also makes them want to spend their time hanging out among their own. Some might say, immigrants will change American politics, but historically that issue was dealt with pretty effectively by simply not having a universal franchise; we could always go back to the old laws restricting voting rights to people meeting certain qualifications.

The more people a country has, the stronger its economy and therefore its military is. Even if, on paper, wages seem to go down because of an influx of immigrants willing to work for less, real wages are not really affected that much because the savings to the company in labor costs are passed on to consumers, so their dollars go further even if they're not getting paid as much. Plus, economies of scale from having more customers and workers allow businesses to operate more efficiently.

Some might say, immigrants will bring disease and terrorism, but those concerns are pretty overblown. Covid, for example, does not cause as serious of an illness as people have claimed, and the odds of any given person's getting attacked by a terrorist are pretty low, even in countries that have a lot of Arabs. 9/11 could have been prevented by having more secure cockpit doors or allowing pilots to be armed. Probably a lot of Islamist terrorism could be prevented too by not having a U.S. foreign policy that involves arming and training terrorists like Osama bin Laden and then provoking them to attack us by meddling in the affairs of the Arab world.

I think I've demolished all the arguments for why we need a visa system; does anyone have a rebuttal?

I was in the same exact situation. Moved to the US after working in office job for 10 years. I couldn't find a job in the same field. No local work history nor references. I accepted the situation and decided to do what it takes to make a living. I started peeling potatoes and carrots for $9 an hour at a local restaurant. Then did newspaper delivery, then a warehouse job. I went to work everyday with the attitude that I will do whatever it takes to make a living and that a person must start somewhere, and nothing will be easy. I was really determined on that. I got promoted in the warehouse, a year and half later I was able to get a better job in the same new field. A year after that I was promoted to supervisor, then assistant manager. I was then offered a job as regional coordinator and operations supervisor. I am making a bit over $70K with 3 weeks paid vacation and good benefits. I would have not been able to be where I am now if I was not lifting boxes at warehouses. Really, this made me start from the bottom and helped me understand the business really well since it was all new to me.

My mom’s IR5 had a 5-month validity from the date of her medical. The exact date of expiry will be printed on the visa.

In general, an immigrant visa is usually valid for up to six months from the date of issuance unless your medical examination expires sooner, which may make your visa valid for less than six months.

“Everyone earning up to $75,000 in adjusted gross income — the income on your tax return — and who has a Social Security number will receive a $1,200 payment.” (Source: AP)

Since your spouse does not have a Social Security Number and the bill specifically requires an adult to have a security number valid for work, that disqualifies him/her from being a beneficiary of the stimulus check.

    Unfortunately, you’ll only get $1,200.

That is something very personal to the couple - I (the immigrant) would have been very upset if my husband had that attitude. I have lived independently my entire life, spent years gaining advanced degrees to further my career, always made my own money and have a passion for what I do. So one of my first priorities was getting a job in my field. Otherwise I don't think I could have settled here. Took me about 3 months of full time job searching (started about 2 months before the EAD arrived).

After just one year together you’re ready to divorce your wife because her parents have a greater hold over her than you do? Isn’t that typical for patriarchal cultures like yours where it takes some time for a young couple to become truly independent of their parents and in-laws? Don’t you think you’ve not yet done enough to earn her loyalty, I mean you’ve just been in her life perhaps a couple years and lived with her once while they’ve been in hers for twenty something or more years.

And if you love her, wouldn’t you want to put a little more time into extricating her from the grip of her parents who are supposedly financially abusing her? Loyalty typically grows with time.

You mean you didn’t know these things or had hints of it before coming to America on her sponsorship? You claim you have a good relationship with your wife but simultaneously you want to divorce her? Well others have already answered your question so I don’t really have much to add.

Good luck with whichever choice you decide to go with.

There IS a public charge rule. It's why sponsors have to file affidavits of support and make 150% of the poverty line for their household size. What do you think that's for? Fun?

The proposed new rule is designed to make that qualification nearly impossible to PROVE—a lawyer I spoke to recently described it as requiring "a financial colonoscopy" and a far more extensive investigation than the existing documentation. And thus more difficult to overcome. It is a targeted act of discrimination to cut family-based immigration, which the bigoted administration otherwise has less leverage over than other forms of immigration. I'm a US citizen, by the way, and I am not affected by this rule.

Apart from all of that, by the way, I don't believe there should be a public charge rule at all. If immigrants pay taxes, they should be able to access public services. Our public services are such a disaster that I can't imagine anyone willfully relying on them if they didn't have to. The idea that people immigrating are pernicious freeloaders is preposterous. Do you think everyone besides you is trying to spend loads of money and time immigrating just to cheat and live the cushy life of SNAP benefits and Medicaid?

Try to access common sense, generosity and compassion simultaneously. It would change your life.

You can't do anything. Now that she has her Green Card, and a 10 year GC at that, it will be almost impossible for it to be taken away. You had leverage before she got the GC, but now, any means to try to have her removed is futile. She is here to stay. This is why it is best to get to know someone as much as you can before marrying and immigrating.

The best advice for you now is to divorce and move on with your life. And if you are wondering, yes, you are still on the hook for the affidavit of support.

It sound like she had a well thought out plan. And it sounds like she did research and knew a lot about the immigration system. There are some people who know how to play the long game. The moment you had an inkling of fraud you should have made a move to protect yourself.

nycaribb reacted to xoxchu in Medical Exam Review for Dr Gulzar Cheema Surrey 2019
This is a review and run-down of my experience with Dr Cheema and his office when getting my medical exam for my Spousal Visa. My visa interview is on December 10th, 2019 at 7:30am.

    Before the appointment:
I contacted Dr Cheema's office through email on Thursday November 15th, 2019 and did not get a reply yet on the following Wednesday. On Wednesday, I followed up with them and received a phone call right away. The lady on the phone was very nice and calm, she apologized for missing the email and gave me all the information I needed and booked my appointment as well for Thursday November 28th, 2019 at 10:30am. I'm currently pregnant, so I asked her if I needed to go earlier due to their website saying that pregnant applicants needs to go to Vancouver to do their X-rays and will need 10 days for the results to come back. She said it was fine, and they now do the x-rays at the same place in Surrey. She also told me that I didn't need to bring five passport photos (as stated on their website) because they will take the photo when you are at the office.

Make sure you collect all necessary documents that is listed on their website. It will make everything go a lot smoother. I saw families have to pay a lot of money for getting their shots at Dr Cheema's office.
Passport Government issued ID (eg. drivers license) Appointment letter/ Email from the NVC Immunization Records - If you were born in Canada/ have gone to elementary school/ high school in Canada, you can go to your city's public health centre to obtain your immunization records. You'll also need to get a flu shot (between October and February). Payment - $350 (cash or debit only)
    During the appointment:
On the day of the appointment, I arrived at approx 10:20am. If you're driving, there is plenty of parking in the parking lot of the plaza that their office is located in. Upon arrival, I told the front desk that I was here for my medical exam, they told me to take a seat and wait for my name to be called. The secretary in the front called me shortly after, she collected all my documents, photocopied them and returned them to me. Payment was made at this time and a receipt is given. My photo was also taken at this time. I was then given 3 forms to fill out while seated. Just your basic information like date of birth, name, address, address in the US and such. After that, I returned the forms and sat down to wait to be called again.

At about 11:20am approx an hour after I entered the office, I was called to an examination room. The lady who brought me in, took my weight and height. She then told me to please turn off my cell phone while in the examination room. Then Dr Cheema came in, he asked me questions very quickly, such as if I had mental health problems, if I do drugs.. etc. He breezed through them. He quickly listen to my chest, asked me to cover one eye and read him a letter, cover the other eye and read him a letter. Asked to lie down, since I was pregnant, he didn't press my abdomen. Then he left the room. From the time he came in and out, it was a total of three minutes. Only 3 minutes!

The nurse came in to show me the address for the next two locations I needed to go to. Westcoast imaging and Life labs. She also told me I can pick up my medical exam results on Monday after 4pm or anytime the following days. You're given all the forms needed for your X-rays, blood tests and urine test.

    Xrays/ blood test/ urine test:
Once you leave the doctors office, West coast Imaging is the first place to go in terms of distance. It's a new building, therefore it is no longer at the same location as the life labs. There is parking behind the building of West coast imaging. Walked in, gave the front desk my papers and waited for about 10 minutes. I was then called inside, given a smock like apron and asked to change. If you're pregnant, make sure to tell the X-ray person you're pregnant. They'll give you extra protective layers around your pelvis and abdomen. Since it is chest x-ray only.

Next is Life labs for your blood test and urine test. They're located on the second floor.  I walked in at approx 12:20pm and checked in at the front desk. Then you just sit and wait. They have a TV displaying how any people are in front of you and how long you have to wait. However, the wait time is just an estimate. I waited approx 35 minutes when the TV displayed that the wait would be 20 mins. One you're called up again, you show the lady your papers and ID. Then you for your blood test and also urine test. I was out of life labs by 1:05pm.

    Pick up day:
Pick up is back at Dr Cheema's office. Since I'm lucky enough to live in the Vancouver area, I chose not to go pick up my medical exam results on the day it was finished. I've heard that sometimes the results may not be ready on the day. So I went in on following Wednesday. Upon arrival, I told the front desk that I'm here to pick up the results, showed her my ID and she gave me two packages. One said "DO NOT OPEN" and that is the one that you need to take to take with you to the interview. The other smaller package was not sealed, inside it contained a CD of my X-rays and also my vaccination records from Dr Cheema. The front desk told me that the CD is for me to bring with me when I enter the US for the first time after the interview. If the custom officers ask for it, then I will give it to them. The vaccination records are just for my own keeping. She wished me luck on my interview and I was on my way.

Hope my review for the medical exam from Dr Cheema was helpful!! Thank you for reading and good luck with your own medical exam and interview!
