Did you try explaining it to the landlord? I explained it to mine before I moved in that my fiance at the time wouldn't have a SSN. They just appreciated me being honest with them and letting them know ahead of time. 

 

Try explaining that when you get fiance and spousal Visas that you get background checks too. I feel like the landlord you are dealing with isn't being too sensible, but that's just me.

Yep this is true. Most places will want to run a check for anyone living in the place that is over 18, even if they don’t sign the lease but are just marked as residents.

 

I didn’t add my husband to the lease when he came in on a k-1, it felt like an unneeded hassle at the time, and the apartment didn’t say anything because it was a pretty run down place as it was.

 

but no, requiring a SSN isnt discrimination. Much like requiring people to make 3 times the rent for an approval, or no pets, or such requirements they impose on themselves, it doesn’t mean you can’t rent, you just can’t rent from anyone who has a requirement you don’t meet. 

 

And yea it may hurt the business to not be able to rent to someone who makes close to the rent line or to someone who they have no background check on, but to the landlords it’s worth it. Security is everything and knowing who you rent to is incredibly important for your own knowledge and the safety of your residents.

 

 

 I would rather live in a complex that runs checks on its residents, than one that doesn’t.

sorry but requiring SSN isn't discrimination. A company or landlord has every right to run a background check and decide who they like to accept. If they deny you. Will you run to a bank and try to open a account without a SSN and call out discrimination?

you can sign the lease on your name alone and then add your husband to the lease later once he has received the SSN. not exactly the same scenario but i had the apartment on my name and then added my wife to the lease after we had lived together for a few months after the marriage

Another idea is to contact a real estate agent.  Some, in fact, specialize in apartment rentals; however, any licensed agent can probably advise you accurately, if not help you outright.

 

With everything else that you have to think about during this time, it's good to rely on knowledgeable allies.

This all sounds quite normal.   I think my husband’s took 4-5 weeks.  We had to wait until after that to open the credit union account, buy his vehicle etc.

This. A lot of landlord doesn't know the other sources they can use other than just SSN/In state ID only.

On a separate note, I'm a renter and I'm trying to think if I should stay quiet until married/after getting SSN to put him on my lease (I'm the one who paying, I prepaid for it so that isn't a problem) but I think the locals here are still going to bring up the lack of ID to their wishes of what they want vs the other source they can take is out there like passport and what else... not sure what to do from here.

I read a thread on reddit yesterday, this UK citizen (Chinese ethnicity, was born in China, lost Chinese citizenship at age 8 when gaining UK citizenship) was detained and questioned for hours at the airport entering the US.

He kept insisting it was racism. I'm like we are in a trade war with China. Something triggered their investigation. They kept changing rooms and repeating questions to see if you change your story. They were doing their job. Yes, there were other Chinese people there being detained. Doesn't make it racist. (Part of the problem was that he refused them access to a laptop because it belonged to the bank he worked for and had confidential information on it. Also, it was late at night and they couldn't reach his employer until the morning.)

I was detained once at Tel Aviv airport. I remained calm and understanding, even chatted with the other travellers in the same situation. Eventually they let me go. The girl who freaked out and cried got taken for a body search.

My husband was interrogated by CIA and Mossad at JFK before boarding a plane to Israel. They thought he might be an Islamist LOL because he hung out at Islamist websites to gain knowledge and hack into them... (He is a white hat.)

In the apartment I rented, only occupants listed on the lease could stay in the apartment more than a few days.  It would have been a violation of the lease to have someone other than a listed person in the apartment for months.......If I were bringing a fiance here on a K-1, I would absolutely get that SSN as soon as possible.
