I'm trying to figure out why he would ask you for a passport in the first place. How would he ever even venture to guess that you weren't a citizen? Just wow.

He asked for my driver's license at first and I said I don't have any coz I just migrated here. So he asked for my passport.

Your husband would have been well within his rights to tell that dude to mind his own business

If you search the archives, about a year ago a lady was held for six weeks for being a passenger in car in an auto crash.  You are required to have proof of status.

And one step further . . . come to Arizona with an "illegal" . . . get a misdemeanor or felony, etc.

The law states at the minimum you are required to identify yourself to a law enforcement officer. That's standard across the US. If you cannot prove who you are they have the right to detain you until your identity is established ( You could be number 1 fugitive on america's most wanted for a the officer knows) while true they can't just go walking down the street asking people for identification without some kind of just cause, you were in a vehicle that was stopped for a legitimate reason ( though honestly, pretty petty reason, but a legal reason none the less), so it puts you in the situation where he could ask to identify everyone in the vehicle. I can speak on experience that most local police or sheriff's honestly don't care about your immigration status, not their concern, but they are interested in making sure you are who you say you are. Even without your passport it probably would have been a judgement call if he really wanted to push the case. You had identification, and that's all he wanted I'm sure. Every state has different laws for this. Here is a link to a good article that helps clarify things in easy to understand terms.

https://www.flexyourrights.org/faqs/when-can-police-ask-for-id/

And it looks like ohio is one of the stop and identify states included.

As a passenger the sheriff can ask for your ID but your are not legally required to do so unless he has probable cause that you committed or about to commit a crime.
