For reasons that I can't get into, I can't go to China.

I asked about the same situation, but from the aspect of getting a tourism visa.

One person mentioned meeting in a third country, which I initially considered and might do.  I want to see where this goes first.

We seem to be stuck in between more than friends but not any where close to getting married now.

I’d vote for the third country time together.  Possibly Canada, as it’s similar in a lot of ways to the US, so you both could get a more real feel for living together in the US, rather than a country vastly different from what both of you are used to.

I would not advise seeking a K1 to use as a tourist visa.  And if you wind up deciding to get married and filing a K1 a second time, she would likely be asked why she didn’t fulfill the terms of the K1 the first time (assuming it was approved and issued), at which point, she’d have to honestly explain that the first K1 was a dry run, which is not the intended use.

As an aside, if she is going back for cultural reason and need approval of the family etc, I am not sure how it will play out with the family that you are unable or unwilling to travel to China.

I fully agree with you and it has been a concern of mine as well for a while.

I've considered suggesting going to Hong Kong to meet them.  Hong Kong might be a good vacation spot for us too.

I affirm Hong Kong as a good possibility too. Also the need to be “in her cultural space “ is important and one of the hurdles of a relationship .. even when the differences aren’t as big. In the early stages of a relationship these differences can seem unimportant .. but in the long term , they can become significant barriers.., best to know and acknowledge early on

It would be a misrepresentation to sign a document stating your intent to marry within 90 days - as required for the K-1 process - without intending to marry within 90 days. Don’t do that.

These are all good responses!  Thanks!

I'm starting to like the third country option the more that I think about it.  It depends on less unpredictability of rejection w/ the visa, and shows my willingness to go to her.

Concurrent thread with more info on OP's situation:

Yeah, definitely not a K1 situation. Sounds you both care for each other.... more than friends, less than lovers so best thing is to carry on the long distance and visit each other in another country. See where things go from there.

K1 is not a 'let's see if we are compatible before we get married' visa. I would have created a tinder-like app for that if that was the case.

3rd country suggestion - emm Singapore. Just my 2 cents.

Why are you so dead set against visiting China, if I may ask.

Country: China

Visa: CR1 (DCF)

2015-06-30  Started dating

2018-02-27  Married

2018-06-08  I-130 filed via DCF

2018-06-12  I-130 Notice of Approval

2018-10-05  Submitted DS-260 online and supplemental documents via CITIC Bank

2018-10-10  DS-260 approved

2018-11-27  Medical exam

2018-12-03  Interview Passed

2018-12-04  Visa issued

2018-12-07  Visa packet and passport picked up from CITIC Bank

Future steps:

May 2019  Move to U.S.

Yeah the third-party country is your best bet. It's hard to say how good her chances are for getting a B2. B2's can be unpredictable. K1 is simply not for you guys due to undeveloped relationship. Not to say I don't think your relationship isn't serious or anything. But your romantic relationship hasn't developed ENOUGH yet to the point where you both know you want to be married and reside permanently in the US. Even really strong couples get strained from going through the immigration process. Besides, a vacation/trip together somewhere now in the present or near future will only help your potential future K1 or CR1 visa application.

Would the solution be for her to bring her own money and find a place so she can show that she's not that dependent on me?

"Find a place"?  B-2 is for short visits to the USA, not to live here.

This.

Does she intent to actually visit or you're just bringing her in to live?

Also as for b2 visa.  She applies and finds out if she'll get approved or not. That's really the end of story here and you dont help on any way. Of course she needs to disclose that she's visiting you.

K1

09.2015 - Green Card received.

"Find a place" sounds more like "find a place to live."
