Seriously? Please educate yourself. Also, if the money was from a joint account, it is equally her money, no matter who earned it.

I say you are an ignorant, because you say mexican(s) I do not know your mother in law, but I know about mexico, been there, have friends and all of them have assets, I am sure you never been there, do not generalize about things you do not know, that's called ignorance and stupidity

I’d probably also be ranting if my spouse was planning on selling my car and putting the proceeds in a bank account belonging to someone else. The ranting is probably being aimed in the wrong direction here. Nevertheless, it’s a supremely stupid idea. It will be obvious it’s a transparent attempt to mislead, and that in itself would probably lead to a denial regardless of anything else.

Hi. I never said any of what you are accusing me of saying above. I"M MEXICAN! I think you meant your comment for OP, not for me. I'm on your side, remember? Please edit your response to delete my comment, which is in support of your comment.

We don't know anything about the OP or his wife. Obviously sounds like they have been married for 10+ years or at least together for that long. Don't know how he met his wife, he might have done a CR-1 or K-1 to get his wife here, we don;t know. OP could have spent much time in Mexico and have a very good knowledge at least of that area where his wife's family is. So that's why taking a venting/ranting so seriously is absurd. And like @SusieQQQ said, welcome to the internet where you will find anything and everything said. Get used to it.

Also please do read the initial post again, the OP's wife doesn't just want to add money to their own joint account, he said his wife wants to sell a car and make a brand new account in her mother's name in Mexico with the profits. Big big difference.

I just took what he said at face value. Your adding all these extra details in your head to make OP comment seem less offensive. To me, it doesn't matter what visa she came on, how long they've been married, or whether or not OP has spent any time in Mexico. It was ignorant for him to say that 99.99999% of Mexicans don't have any assets. That is simply not true. And I was never under the impression that OP's wife wanted to add money to their joint account. It was clear that she took money from their joint account to open a separate account in Mexico. Again, there is nothing wrong with her doing that, as it is equally her money to do with whatever she sees fit. Now, if it were me, would I have discussed something like that with my husband first? Of course I would have.

As others have said, like the comment above, just have her go ahead and apply without the bank account. She'll probably do fine. They're pretty gracious with tourist visas for elderly parents. My own M-I-L had no assets, from Latin America, and was approved.

Forgot people are so sensitive. Feel free to prove me wrong, and I'll just be guessing here, but I'll say 85-90% of Americans too cannot show $5000 in their bank account. Gonna be higher in Mexico. Maybe low 90s would be my guess? Take 100 Mexicans and maybe 8 of them have +5k in their bank account.

Putting all the .99999s made it ignorant cause the number I used (tying on phone dont have exact number) probably equaled 1 in 10 or 100 million have no savings

It's probably more like 90-95%.

I'm still curious how having a bank account is even viewed as a strong tie to return home. Moving money is one of the easiest things to do, and one doesn't even need to do it to overstay.

Whilst there is no definitive data out there on the average amount of money people have in their checking accounts, I found the following data.

USA: https://www.thebalance.com/what-is-the-average-bank-account-balance-4171574

Mexico: https://www.efe.com/efe/english/life/mexican-households-have-an-average-of-3-8-members-843-in-monthly-income/50000263-2666718

Take this with a grain of salt, living in one country is not better or worse than the other - it's subjective.

Now that this is out of the way, can we kindly get back on topic?
