Looks like you live in Florida, so it might not have been too hard on her. Lots of Brazilians there, easy to assimilate, work and find help, even if not done by the books.

And OP's situation isn't that uncommon. A distant family member of mine overstayed her tourist visa by something like 15 years, married, and adjusted without any issues whatsoever. 

I have two friends here in Texas that ICE came to their house and it was 9 months since arrival on a K1 and the other 1 year and they did ask why the delay.

It is a whole new ballgame.

 

Great for the OP who is all caught up in his feelings because we aren't throwing confetti at a 5 year delay. You say she never had to worry was she locked in the house for  5 years. That was your choice and trust me you didn't put nobodies mind at ease.

We all knew it wouldn't be much of an issue getting a greencard after so long, USCIS isn't an issue.

 

Obviously waiting so long to file could become an issue in other ways, as others have already mentioned. So for OP to say "my wife never had to worry about anything" simply isn't true. Maybe she didn't worry because she didn't know any better, who knows, but had she known about the situation OP put her in by not filing for AOS then yes, she would've been worried. Anyone without status in this country should be worried to some degree, if they aren't then they just don't know the potential consequences or just don't care if they end up in trouble.

 

Not to mention how some US citizens seem to bring foreign fiancés here without bothering to file for AOS. Some of them are careless that way, they don't seem to care that their foreign woman/man could end up in major trouble for being here without status. Extremely selfish to keep your supposedly "loved one" from a real life without a bunch of restrictions. Creepy and cruel.

As someone who for a decade was out of status and therefore deportable, I thoroughly do not recommend it. Even today I will still have the occasional nightmare about those times. 

 

It was 100% my fault, but I would never put anyone that I purportedly loved through that kind of uncertainty.

l wouldn't recommend it esp if there's a way to be lawful.  Some pple wait to file due to  relationship doubts or financial reasons.  Glad u two are strong and still together.  Congrats on approval.

Assure them of....what...exactly?  That they may or may not stand the possibility of being picked up and deported?  That they may or may not have to look over their shoulders for years in fear of that?  That they may or may not ever have to travel to their home country for emergency purposes and then be trapped with no legal basis to return?  That they may or may not have to work illegally to help support their family later on?

 

Like you said, everybody's situation is different.  It worked out for your wife in the end, the next person may not be as lucky.

I couldn't imagine not being able to travel outside the US to visit my family abroad for five years...  I guess some people don't feel that way, but this is one of the reasons my husband and I chose CR-1, so that he could go back to Brazil to visit his family at any time, without having to wait six months for AP if we had gone the K-1 route.

I'm glad there there was no way you could have become sick, injured, or worse.

I'm glad there was no way she would need to travel abroad in 5+ years.

I'm glad there was no way you would break up.

I'm glad there was no way she could have had an encounter with ICE.

Having so few worries is a wonderful thing.

Also glad that no one in her family in the Philippines got sick or worse and she needed to go back quickly. She would have had to start the process over.

The first thought on my mind was - the possibility of a new law which would target all visa overstayers. Even in this case it is not a classic visa overstay but the OPs wife was undocumented . 

And I was so upset because of my 2 weeks overstay. 

I guess that guys were very nonchalant.
