My fiance is planning his first visit to the US and wants to do so while we wait for Homeland approval.  This also requires a DS-160.  Does anyone have any experience or advice on this subject?

It is a pretty simple process, fill the form in pay the fee go to the interview.

No experience, but I've read that it's very rare to get a tourist visa approved while a K-1 is processing.

Most people who visit the US while waiting for a K-1 either don't need a visa to visit the US at all, are from a visa waiver program country, or had a visa from before applying for the K-1.

ditto that.

obtaining a visitor passport while a K1 is pending is very difficult, if not impossible, from all I've seen.

I don't have any advice but would be completely shocked if he got one.   It's extremely difficult for a Pakistani man to get a visit visa to begin with and  Ive not seen anyone who is already working on immigration get one at all.

  • Technically, it is possible (on paper), the chance is near to 0% (at least with "touch" consulate like Ho Chi Minh City). Some of my relatives already tried this with Ho Chi Minh City Consulate and all failed 😄
  • The process for Tourist Visa is very simple
    • File out the form
    • Prepare some documents to show the financial ability, evidence to show ties to home-country
    • Pay the fee

Our K1 application has yet to be processed, so we thought it would be a good idea to squeeze in a visit.  We hoped it could help support our upcoming case, show our true intent with what we've started, and allow him a chance to meet my family.  Both situations obviously require DS-160's.

Your original post reads "while we wait for Homeland approval"... which infers the petition has already been filed and why members were mentioning how difficult it is to get a tourist visa approved with a pending K1.

Just to clarify, have you actually filed/submitted the K1 application as of yet?  If not, there's a slightly better chance of getting a tourist visa approved with showing compelling reasons why the person would return to their home country...if it has been filed, then it's a very slim chance.

Assuming OP's a USC, odds of a tourist visa for fiance are slim to none. Any CO would wonder if he's a risk to AOS.. and what prevents him from not returning home?
