 Hey everybody,

My wife is going for her interview next Tuesday on the 25th.

The consulate and Sri Lanka does not allow anyone to accompany the beneficiary into the interview. So, in light of that, I thought it might be beneficial for  her to be able to present a letter written by me to the consular.

I am posting what I have written, and would appreciate any and all feedback on it. Please feel free to suggest any edits to it.

Another option is to hand your passport to the beneficiary while you wait outside.

I didn’t know about that option.

As the interview view is Tuesday, travel really isn’t an option.

Thank you for the information.

Indeed I am.  I'm curious as to why you ask.

I think the question was posed due to the statement in your letter of not being able to have face-time with your spouse because of not being able to fly due to your recent back surgery, then following that up with the statement about how you're presently remodeling your basement.

(Not asking you to justify the statements in your letter, just giving my thoughts as to why the member might have asked that question :) )

Hmmmmm. I can see why that would be asked then.

I seem to have given a false impression. I haven’t had back surgery recently. I’ve had back issues for decades, and had surgery a few years ago. It’s one of those on again, off again things.

Im actually dealing with a flare up at the moment. I use an inversion table to get relief. Spinal decompression really makes a huge difference. Just five minutes hanging upside down, and I’m good.

Thanks for the observation. I’ll rephrase my letter.

Just my personal opinion,  you should omit the first part and go directly to your point (explain you would go but circumstances prevent you to go).  I am not sure but the nature of that part is what I normally receive from our suppliers and it could be just me, I do not like it.

Just needs some tweaks to make it read more like the intended positive. For example:

I have regrettably not been able to travel to Sri Lanka to visit Pam as much as I would have liked. Chronic back issues and surgery a few years ago have made it painful for me to fly in economy class for such a great distance. On my first trip to see Pam, I found it was only tolerable with the extra space in business class. However, business class is very expensive and multiple trips were beyond my means. Instead, I invested in our relationship in a different way. Saving that money on airfare allowed me to begin remodeling our home, which Pam and I will enjoy for years to come.

Agreed. At least cut it down to one sentence.

Second paragraph: do not apologize. You are not allowed to attend the interview; you aren't doing anything wrong. Instead of excusing why you aren't there, try saying why you want to be there had it been possible. That will be a stronger, more active position.

From all the many embassy and consulate interview reviews I have read on VJ, I would suggest not sending this letter at all.  The purpose of the interview is to ask the beneficiary questions about the relationship, not the petitioner, so that the CO can decide if the relationship is credible, if the beneficiary is trying to enter the US solely to get citizenship, not to be in a relationship, i.e., to commit fraud.  This is why petitioners are not allowed in the interview in most countries.  Also, many reviews of these interviews say that the CO had mostly made up his/her mind before the interview, based on the documents provided to support the application BEFORE the interview, not during, and did not ask for or allow additional documents, so chances are your letter would not be admissible by the beneficiary anyway.  The contents of the letter could even hurt your case if it is read by the CO, when you mention things like not spending enough time together, not having enough money to travel, health issues, etc.  All of this could be taken the wrong way by the CO, and interpreted as  excuses and detract from the  real issue--is the relationship bona fide?  Is the beneficiary in a genuine relationship with the petitioner, or just trying to enter the US and then leave the relationship behind?  From what I see, your letter does not help your case at all and could even hurt it.  Better to coach the petitioner and make sure she knows all of the facts of your family, your past, how you met, your future plans, etc., to help her prepare and be confident in answering the most likely questions she will get in the interview.  Just my two cents based on a lot of research and stories and reviews posted on VJ.
