What do you guys think is the best job for 23 year old student? also prefer to find a job that pays more then minimum hourly wage?

People here talking bout high paying jobs, on the other side when i was in US most of the jobs i was looking to start with were paying minimum hourly wage ...

That's a good question. What is your background? Since I have a call center background, I was able to use that to get my first job here. Depending on what you want to do, start where you think you could have a career.

I am about to became economist, 3 exams left, i have been planning my own business, but would need to find some job first to raise funds for that... I would prefer some paid internship maybe, or regular job, because i have little experience

One thing I did when I moved here, I applied to many jobs as I can that I am interested in. Then if you get an offer, you can pick the one that you like the most that pays enough. Most people who commented on this post has a lot of experience and/or education which is why they were good pay. In most cases, we all had to start from the bottom and work our way up. Good luck on your search and keep us posted.

If you're living in a place with a strong job market, it shouldn't be that difficult for you to find a "regular job" that pays decently. The economy is still doing pretty well, and the job market is still very good in many areas of the country.

Took my hubby two years because many employers could not or would not spend the money to verify his past employers in the UK. After he had his first job it was easy for him to get jobs after that.

I am curious now that I have picked up a rideshare side gig, would you need the EAD for this also? Not that it really matters for my fiance, because she doesn't know how to drive, and will likely be in school during the time we wait for it, but it did get me to thinking what if...even for something  where you are considered an "independent contractor" when you pick up and deliver food or drive people places...

Yes, it is still a job and an immigrant would need an EAD for that. However, I am not sure Lyft and Uber would bother making sure someone actually has that. They barely run a background check on people and that is why I will never use a ride share if I am all by myself...

I suggest slowing down.  Take about 6 months or a year to adjust.  Learn the way of the USA, our culture, our tax system, the people to avoid.

When I brought my fiancé to the USA I had no desire for her to go work,  You have you entire life to work,  enjoy the ride and experience life.  Life is not about working, it's about living.

I feel sorry for the people who I see come to the USA and go directly to work, what kind of life is that?  I also see people posting stuff like when can my fiancé or husband work?  I think to myself did you marry for love or marry for an extra income, jeez.

Hey I'm all for what you say. Enjoy the break is what I told my new husband. He, however, has a different mind set. He said he is used to working from 7am to 8pm teaching, so coming here and doing nothing was driving him crazy! Gym, lunches, keeping house was not cutting it for him. Luckily, I have some connections with local nonprofits and he has started volunteering a few days a week for a few hours. But anyway, my point was that some people do not appreciate the time off like you are I might.

I got offered a job very shortly after getting my greencard. Been working there for 6 weeks through a temp agency now and was offered a permanent position just yesterday.

Pretty pleased with that.

The only problem I have is, I dont think they offered me enough. I dont want to insult them by asking too much, but I dont want to be taken advantage of either. I have too little experience in America's job market to make an educated decision on that.

Asking my coworkers what they make is considered rude, and tentatively prodding them didnt work. I dont know anyone else who works in the insurance business to ask.

How did you all manage this?

Congratulations on the job.  I think you are in a good position to ask for a higher salary.  There is a Ask A Manager article on how to do that.

When I had to come up with a salary range I looked for my type of job on Indeed and Glassdoor and estimated my market value based on the ranges they gave there.

I work for a government agency, and I believe I am underpaid too. I get paid 80% of policy for my position. I think most people are underpaid in the beginning, especially if they are immigrants and it is hard for employers to verify past work experience. I have worked here for just over a year now, and will have my performance evaluation this month, which usually results in a raise if performance is satisfactory.

I was just very excited to be offered a job so soon, I probably would have done it for minimum wage if that was all they could offer... 🤣

Just looking at other job openings gave me a better idea of what a normal salary for my position would be. I do get great benefits though, so that made up for the lower wage. My husband had been without health insurance for 9 years because he simply couldn't afford it, so it was great to have good insurance for both of us.

It's very hard to find a job there ! It will take up-to 5 -6 month or sometimes it will be a year also.so when you decided to go abroad for live and work then you should get the job offer letter from employer in hand before going. after that you can go happily.job offer letter also helps you to get visa quickly.

Well, that depends on the country you are going to live and work. I know SG  can work that way but for the US, if you are on a fiance or spouse visa, they won't just simply offer you a job while you are not even in the US. Idk if that may have happened in the past, but I have not heard that it happened to anyone I know personally.
