How soon did you find your first job?

I think that all depends a lot on your experience, location, your industry and connections etc. And the most important part is luck too. But I know many people who struggled to get a job. Sometimes there are lucky people who get a job soon. The only way is to start looking for jobs in the area where you are living. and you can use the job portals to search job and can take help from the job consultancies.

I am about to became economist, 3 exams left, i have been planning my own business, but would need to find some job first to raise funds for that... I would prefer some paid internship maybe, or regular job, because i have little experience

Having little experience is fine you can start your career as an intern in any company in which you find a vacancy that suits your skills and ability. Once you start working with a company abroad you can easily raise funds and in your case you can start saving for your business.

Depends on your city too. What type of city are you moving into.

It was hard for me too. Prior to coming to U.S., I have 6 years of experience as software engineer working on systems used by millions of people across the globe. I graduated Magna Cum Laude for a degree requiring 300+ units to complete. (I had 3.80 GPA as evaluated by WES)

I got a job offer in different states apart from the City where my husband lives. I ended up having to wash dishes for a job because I didnt want to move into another state without my husband. I applied for numerous related jobs and none seemed to call me for interviews. At that point, I honestly felt I was discriminated because I had my degree from Philippines. I enrolled MBA in the local university. Guess what? Just with 6 units in my MBA program (and an updated resume with "MBA in progress in local university") got tons and tons of job interviews.

I know another filipina in the same city who used to be a call center agent and now she works as a server in a bakery. I know another filipina who used to be a pharmacist who now works as a home cleaner. Another filipina, now works as a dentist assistant, only after studying for a year in a local school.

It can be tough.

I am totally agree.

I wonder how employers in the US look at highly qualified new residents without any US job experience. Will it hard to get recruited without this?

US experience certainly helps, but is no deal breaker. You may have to accept a step down in seniority levels and work your way back up. Network & tailor your application with your specific expertise in mind. Avoid non-specialized jobs unless you absolutely can't afford it - stepping out of one's field of expertise can make it very hard to get back in.

Thanks for the suggestion, I know it's a bit tricky to get in straight in mid or higher position while you're very new to the country itself. I guess just need to take a step down and start from beginning again is the most logical thing.

Starting lower, or from the beginning, isn't all bad.  You'll be able to deal with the natural differences between what you're used to and the American system, and still be able to show your proficiency.  Realizing this enables you to take best advantage of such an opportunity.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

it took me ten days after I arrive to find a job. I had to take a low ball offer and once I solidify my position I ask for a raise. I worked as a receptionist until got promoted to Administrative Assistant, then I found a new job that pays better.

I have a question, did anyone try working for the city ?

Got a government job right away. No previous US experience and huge gap between employment. It took me to get interview in a week after applying and 1 month to start. Not a permanent position but they like me alot and hoping I can get permanent one eventually:)

Everything is possible if you working hard and persistent.

depends on your background and skill set.

My husband had a job offer from his union (which he had been a member of for 20+ years in canada and transferred to the local here) shortly after we filed for his AOS, and we were able to expedite his EAD.

if you go by technicalities, he moved in dec of 2018, i filed aos in april (dont recall why i waited but i did) and we had expedited ead in hand and he was working in june. my signature shows the exact timeline
