USCIS Extends Green Card Validity Extension to 24 Months for Green Card Renewals

Effective Sept. 26, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is automatically extending the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (also known as Green Cards) to 24 months for lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card.

 

Lawful permanent residents who properly file Form I-90 to renew an expiring or expired Green Card may receive this extension. Form I-90 receipt notices had previously provided a 12-month extension of the validity of a Green Card.

USCIS has updated the language on Form I-90 receipt notices to extend the validity of a Green Card for 24 months for individuals with a newly filed Form I-90. On Sept. 26, USCIS began printing amended receipt notices for individuals with a pending Form I-90.

 

These receipt notices can be presented with an expired Green Card as evidence of continued status. This extension is expected to help applicants who experience longer processing times, because they will receive proof of lawful permanent resident status as they await their renewed Green Card.

 

If you no longer have your Green Card and you need evidence of your lawful permanent resident status while waiting to receive your replacement Green Card, you may request an appointment at a USCIS Field Office by contacting the USCIS Contact Center, and we may issue you an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp after you file Form I-90.

So now the I90's are slowing to a crawl.  Reminds me of late 2016 when the I751s were back-burnered.

I-90s aren’t a priority.

 

INS —> CIS. The C precedes the I. I see USCIS’s point even though I disagree with charging over $500 for something USCIS has no intention of delivering.

Indeed. By 2019 though it was looking like concurrent N-400 / I-751s were being endangered as I-751 pace picked up. 
 

I’m expecting 36 month extension letters for I-751 this year.  
 

They should just make I-90 and I-751 extension letters good for 10 years. And maybe provide them in a credit card sized form factor. And add a photo and finger print of the LPR.  And let LPRs use them without the original green card.

Great idea!  They can call it a Permanent GC.

It is very interesting as to how USCIS treats the paying customers.  Apparently typical of a government agency.

Other than the revenue streams, is there any good reason to continue 2 year Green Cards or time limited Green Cards?  Just give every Green Card an indefinite expiration date.  Then USCIS could shift a lot of their workforce.

This is really an example of poor management at USCIS.  Since almost all of the I-90s and I-751s are approved they could develop a system to screen through them and fast track approval if the person in charged actually cared.  But approval of I-90s and I-751s are the mundane work beneath the political appointees who run the agency.  They should appoint people in charge who actually care about getting the mundane nuts and bolts of the job completed or just let the career people who know how to get it done do their job.

USCIS is a rounding error in the federal budget.

 

It's badly managed, but they're processing things slowly because they're bad at it, not to try and make money.

 

My dumb idea would be to change conditional green cards to three years, so you can skip ROC if you qualify to naturalize under the three-year rule.
