We have this amazing thing called the internet machine. I hear it's a series of tubes and you can ask it for answers and stuff. Sounds pretty cool if you ask me! :D

Texas becomes the first US state with more than 1 million Covid-19 infections

By Christina Maxouris, CNN
Updated 3:34 PM EST, Wed November 11, 2020

(CNN)Texas has now surpassed one million Covid-19 infections since the start of the pandemic, according to data from Johns Hopkins University -- becoming the first US state to record such a staggering number of cases.

That means about one tenth of the country's more than 10 million positive tests were reported in the Lone Star state.

If Texas -- home to about 29 million people -- were its own country, it would be ranked among the world's Top 10 countries in terms of total cases, according to Johns Hopkins data

A fantastic and relevant question. Here's the overall age breakdown of deaths:

And here's the last week's breakdown by day (looks like about 120):

In the bold, you have those who are younger than 60. You'll notice how infrequent they are, and none were under 30.

Of those 70+: 83%

Of those 60+: 92%

Of those 50+: 98%

Of those men: 61%

Of those women: 39%

1 week change in positive tests: +9200

1 week change in hospitalizations: +39

+X/+14/+0/+2/+7/+11/+5 (220)

1 week death rate: 1.2% (+119)

Immediately hearkens to the FL discussion.. lots of hysteria, little justification. Also, it'll be interesting as their capacity seemed quite low as it was. There's nothing bad about a high utilization by itself, all depending on how capacity/demand responds. It would be dumb to just create a ton of capacity for what just very well may be (and tends to be) a short term influx of patients.

Around here, there would be open revolt (among all ages) if the skool system tried to revert to 100% online again.

It honestly doesn't matter how it makes you feel. When you have teachers and support staff out sick to the point that they can't safely operate schools anymore, you are out of options. My son has has been switched to virtual twice already this year. He hasn't ever been in an group suspected of exposure. They just don't have enough staff left to teach.

I do, and hysterical people worry me far, far more than a virus that has demonstrated to not have much of an effect on school age children.

Not really. The flu is no joke, and kids, especially younger ones, are walking petri dishes who make everyone else around them sick by being a human sprinkler of bodily fluids. The lesson is really the same in keeping them away, in general, from vulnerable people (focus on isolating the vulnerable people and not isolating the kids from everything) when they're showing symptoms of illness. Unlike the kung flu, the normal flu winds up more dangerous to children but we don't act hysterical by regularly exposing them to that risk.. because that's how they build a functional immune system, particularly in that time period of frequent/intense cycles of health and sickness. Hysteria not only hinders that immune system development, but it also stunts essential learning development that comes with school, and causes a litany of psychological issues. As a parent it's my job to do what's best for my kids, making them unjustifiably fearful and harming their educational development is basically abdicating one's role as a parent. This fear stuff is also teaching kids not that the world is a place to experience and learn from but that you have to stay locked down or "masked up", kids don't respond well to that. This is why it was essential kids were allowed back to school.. my daughter has been back since mid-late August and there's no massive outbreaks or kids being hospitalized or dying, even with this "second wave" stuff hitting. I already felt bad for her being depressed and despondent not being around kids during the moronic lockdowns and forced distance learning to finish off their prior school year. I'd be a pretty rotten parent if I was okay with perpetuating that damage unjustifiably.
