Please fill your profile so users can help you better. If you are in South Africa, it seems that you could transit through Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines to Washington Dulles... Travel agent might be helpful, but flights not transiting through the Shengen area are available, but not always convenient.

Am from Mauritius at the moment the only flight available is air Mauritius to Paris and London

Not to ruffle any feathers, but rather be objective: it is not "his" definition, it IS the definition of chain migration. Anyone other than spouse or kid of USC/LPR falls into chain migration. Period.  Besides parents and siblings there is no one else that goes into chain migration.

To enter the US, you have to have been outside of the Shengen area for 14 days.  This thread might be useful:.

She is a spouse of US citizen, thus exempt to those proclamations! So @Vani & Henry can transit through London or Paris.

Misread her story.

I would suggest to try to travel sooner rather than later though. Who knows how things will be in August.

Hi all,

My mother was coming to US on IMM grant visa which when she arrives in US will grant her Green Card. Well, she had a transfer at Zurich airport and they didn't let her go to us, she has to go back to Ukraine. US baned all entry from European countries due to the COVID. Only Americans and diplomats are allowed to entry. Now I do not know what's next since her visa expires on July 2.

Strange, but some of that info contradicts official language on DOS site. She either misunderstood them or they just stated general ban that she falls into. Keep in mind that that if you are not on the list of those being excluded from the ban, then no officials will waste time telling you who is not excluded as that info is pointless to you, so they will state general info like "all travel is baned" etc.

While it is correct your mom is not allowed to enter from EU (unless you are USC/LPR under 21+unmarried) some other direct family memebrs (spouses and kids) should be allowed to travel in.

Also, the persons that are allowed in from i.e. EU are supposed to undergo "self-quarantine" upon arrival to US if I remember correctly.

Again, that will not change anything regarding your mom, just want to clarify in case someone misinterprets your post.

I agree. She should travel as soon as feasible. Her country could be considered remote since it's an island in the middle of an ocean. Sounds like no passengers in or out at the moment: "and Mauritian border Stil close"

No federal law on 14-day "quarantine"; it's recommendedhttps://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/from-other-countries.html

So it's state specific: https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/2020/05/25/coronavirus-travel-restrictions-us-states-quarantine-requirements/5256975002/ Hawaii has strictly enforced it's rule with fines and jail time.

That broad definition differs with how the INA is structured. "Family Preference" categories are for specific, more distant, family relationships with a U.S. citizen and some specified relationships with a lawful permanent resident. The INA considers parents of U.S. citizen as an "Immediate Relative" category.

Perhaps I wasn't clear on the subject. The law is what it is and therefore "chain migration" is allowed, no one is disputing that.

I was simply stating the fact (that some people don't get) that anyone other than immigrant spouse or kid is in reality "chain migration". Strictly speaking even spouses and kids are part of the "chain" but for obvious reason these are "direct" linkage by definition and out of the discussion (or there wouldn't be any).

That it is allowed by law is also a fact. To restrict the chain migration would require extensive changes in the law.

Please note I'm not claiming it should be banned or restricted (I will uphold that view for myself). I'm just saying objectively what parents/siblings migration is without sugar coating it, that's all. I don't mean to stir any controversy or heated debate.

Thanks for the replies.

We contacted US customs in Newark airport and they said only Americans and diplomats are allowed to enter.

It's because Americans and diplomats are known to be immune to COVID-19.

I would check with the embassy or USCIS and find out how to extend the date somehow. Also check on line for info. If none of those pan out I would ask a lawyer. Sometimes just calling and asking a question can get you on the right track without needing to hire them. YouTube might have something too. The problem is this is all new so we all are dealing with things that are not normal. Hope you find the answer. I would be interested in the info

Hi I just wanted to ask how your wife flew from London. I got a IR1 visa too but the US embassy in my country told me am not allowed to transit in EU countries coz I have a non immigrant visa. My husband is a US citizen and I got my visa on 10th of March it expires in August. Thank you for help

I am the wife, my husband is the US Citizen. CR1/IR1 visa is exempt from the proclamation (both are immigrant visas), I'm not sure why your US embassy said this. If your visa was approved prior to that (it was as it was 3 days before mine). I flew on a government backed flight from the UK so was not in the EU Schengen prior to travel. Maybe go back to your embassy but read the link before so you can quote it.

Go via Heathrow. Not sure what transit visa you might need. United Airlines flight London to Newark is government backed so shouldn't get cancelled. It's worth looking at.
