Is self-quarantine after arrival required by law?

CDC "recommends" that travelers self-quarantine for 2 weeks if they have been to the Schengen area. Is this actually a law, i.e. is it a MUST-DO? Or can you still go about your activities right away upon arrival?

I'm not interested in a discussion whether it makes sense or not. My only concern is if I would break the law if I did not self-quarantine upon arrival.

It is not a law,  it, as stated, is only a recommendation.

Oh well, since you're uninterested I guess we're not allowed to point out how selfish you are. 🙄

There is nothing selfish in it when going from a country with less people infected to the country with the most infected in the world.

Of course it is. People are not uniformly infected, and it is exactly your mindset and lack of giving a ####### that caused the US to be hit so hard.

I'm heading to the States and am quarantining in place for two weeks before going outside or attending any appointments (and I'm only transiting through Schengen area, not living there).

I mean, yes, but they're not going to be able to check. It's more of a "Please quarantine, don't be a jerk" rule.

You could technically ignore that, but if it turns out that you're spreading it because of your flight, that's entirely your fault. You could realistically kill people by not quarantining.

It also depends on the state. Hawaii is currently enforcing a 14 day quarantine on anyone arriving in the state. People have been arrested and jailed for not adhering to the restrictions. Several states have issued executive orders mandating that anyone arriving from or transiting through NY or NJ must self quarantine for 14 days, but I am not sure if those are all still in effect.

Yes there is?

Im coming from Australia which has handled it well to the US and I’ll still quarantine.

Depends on the state: https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/news/2020/04/04/coronavirus-travel-restrictions-us-states-quarantine-requirements/2947021001/

In the case of Hawaii, they have enforced penalties: https://www.hawaiitourismauthority.org/news/alerts/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/

It's the less infected countries that infected the larger one.

But that's irrelevant, all it takes is one person to cause an outbreak, but you don't care, you only think about yourself.

The past tense is the key. The outbreak is already here and we are talking about now, not about some point in January-March applying 20/20 hindsight.  There is more sense in quarantine after riding NYC subway than after visiting Europe and taking all precautions possible. How about quarantine after a trip to a local supermarket? Are you sure that there less chance of contracting  it there?

So maybe instead of labeling people irresponsible by default one should think of a context that may differ from a remote village?

I'd love to see some recent data about %% of infected passengers from the international flights
