Most people find it to be beneficial to have a SSN as soon as possible after arriving (before marriage).......it makes opening bank accounts, renting apartments, etc. much easier.....

Do I need to have my SSN before I get married or is it not mandatory?

Check the state you want to get married in.   A couple of states make you jump through extra hoops if you don't

YMMV

It's a federal law that you must provide your Social Security number in exchange for a marriage license, so every state must comply whether it agrees with the edict or not. Title 42 USC Chapter 7, Subchapter IV, Part D, Section 666(a)(13) requires that Social Security numbers be recorded for any applicant for a professional license, a driver's license, an occupational license, a recreational license or a marriage license. The number must be recorded on the application.

Does that mean my marriage is invalid as my wife does not yet have her ssn?

Only people who already have a SSN when applying for a marriage license must provide one.  Otherwise, no foreign national could come to the US to be married?

And destination marriage venues such as Hawaii would be pissed

Ok.  I will have my wife withdraw her i485 then as we didn't get married within 90 days.  I guess now I have an i130 to file .  Oh wait,  we can't cuz we are not eligible and never will be.  Its gonna suck when I hand her a plane ticket telling her to go back when I get home from work.   :)

Next time make sure she has a SSN before asking for marriage

Maybe you can get a ITIN if they live abroad and that will work

SSN is not needed to get married. If a clerk tells you this then they must not want your business, and you can find another town with another clerk. A passport may be presented and used.

SSNs however, can be obtained before you marry as a K1 holder, and it's a pretty good idea to get one.

K-1 holder doesn’t need SNN to marry, but’s its better to apply for one in maiden name before marriage, and later just make an appointment to change the name by showing marriage license.

My marriage is valid and honored in every state. Ps. Got married 10 days after my arrival to US

An SSN is not required to get married.

Although some states have rules that one must attempt to obtain one first and be denied (which won't happen if you're still in the first 76 days, unless there is manual verification involved...in which case I presume they can provide the no-SSN-available letter as well).
