Please correct me if I am wrong. 

If he doesn’t return in those 2 years, he has nothing to claim in terms of benefits that OP may potentially be responsible for, so no need to worry about it.

You can't cancel his green card, he's a legal permanent resident of the US now.  You're financially responsible for him because of the affidavit of support for a long time, even if you get divorced.  Do you still love him?  Do you want to be with him, or did the marriage fall apart?  Or did he just go back home because he was homesick?  Focus more on your relationship and either do what you need to do to try and save it or file for divorce and move on.  Do you have any evidence that your marriage was not bona fide?  Did he commit immigration fraud and can you prove it with documentation?  If you have any evidence you could send that to the USCIS fraud unit and let them decide what to do, if anything.

He isn't the only veteran and also no one has all the knowledge about everything. If there is even 1% chance that someone else knew a way, isn't it in OP's best interest?

Op, your spouse's greencard and Social Security card are his property and yours. You can't kill his permanent residency; it's up to him to surrender it and not you. He has left now but if he chooses to come back there's nothing you can do to stop it. You are on the hook for the affidavit you signed as well. If you guys divorce, he can also remove his conditions with a divorce waiver.

Actually Op's best interest is just to move on. There was no fraud committed; they entered into a bonafied marriage.

That is correct. Please consider the following scenario:

If the beneficiary returns and ends up on public benefits, OP will be on hook to support him, correct? There is no way out of it even if they are divorced?

Thanks everyone!  The marriage fell apart and he decided to leave. I just feel like there is a responsibility on my part as his sponsor to let the USCIS and SS office know that he's not present in the United States anymore and I'd like to withdraw my support in case he comes back without me knowing and does something unpredictable

all above is true but since he is no longer at that address ,  I would "return to sender"  when the green card and ss card arrive

you are no longer responsible for him

Did you at least file for a divorce? If so, wouldn't he need to be present here to sign for it or something?
