I don't think eliminating the parent category will break up families. I think that was just an emotional response.

Sending over USD will go a long way in a third world country . I can understand the person wanting to get them over but you are biased because you are an immigrant . How does the majority of americans feel about bringing over siblings and parents ? I have yet to find someone that thinks its a smart thing to do especially when the smart educated people from STEM fields ( that graduated here too )are in the H1B Loop forever until they leave for Canada or Australia where it takes them little over half a year from overseas to get PR and are welcomed with open arms. 

 

Family friend from eastern europe graduated with an undergraduate degree and graduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill ( ivy league ) and after that a PHD from same instituiton . He has been here for like 13-14 years and is now as a Ast .Professor for Political Science still in the waiting game for a GREEN CARD ! He is educating the future of our country and has so many times almost given up and packed up for another place with merit based system . His research is top notch and he is paying a ton of taxes every year . 

 

And then you have parents that can come here in 6 months with no problem and no benefit what so ever to this country . 

No other country like the USA has this parent migration.

 

End this thing of the past already good god.

If you want to take care of your parents you got a wonderful thing called western union . 

What world do you live in?!?!?! A lot of parent immigration comes from western countries where the immigrating parents will bring their overseas retirement money and spend it in the US. That’s great for the American economy?!?! 

 

There are easy steps to take to protect Medicare. For example, one needs x amount of work credit or x amount of years as a permanent resident before they’re eligible for Medicare. Problem solved.

I feel sorry for you. You must have a very sad, miserable life to be so hateful and nasty. 

 

To answer your questions. No, I did not have a choice about moving to the US nor am I free to move back home, even though I would love to because the US is a really  country to live in. But my husband, who is a USC by birth (as is his parents and their parents and so on all the way back to when this continent belonged to Native Americans), has a sick mother who can’t travel or move abroad. We take care of her because that’s what real families do.

 

If we can convince my parents to move over to the US, they would live on their own. Why would you think they would live with us just because they move over to the US? They have their own money and their own life. And since they’re from Europe, they’re two healthy 70 year olds who probably cost less medically than most 30 year old Americans. Not to mention that many of the foreign parents you seem

so scared of are well off retirees who bring their wealth with them to the US and spend their foreign earned money here, in the US. They bring money into the US economy, not the other way around.

And yes.. this is our situation exactly....  we  brought all our retirement savings and the US economy gets to benefit when we spend it... it is  a huge oversimplification to state that all parent immigration is a huge drain on the taxpayer... it's just not that simple. 

Wrong, there are always hardship rules that are the ones being abused. If you are here and naturalize especially and you have doctors write you up letters that you are really sick and show that you have no money or low income and you take those in you will receive Medicare and other benefits. And you always receive Medicare once you hit retirement age , which is the age bracket we are most likely talking about.

If you have lived in the USA for five years then you become eligible for Medicare. Yes if you have never worked or paid into the system you have to pay a premium buy into PART A and PART B  but for what you get in Medicare its very little compared to the overall costs especially as an old person .

Also like I said the states especially democratic ones handle it way differently they look at income and usually you dont even have to wait 5 years even as an immigrant because they pay through it with state funding.

 

Please dont come to this thread with limited knowledge and start throwing around facts that are only half the truth .

The good news is that some states decided to not adhere strictly to that rule, and they provide coverage through state dollars for those who meet specified income standards.

According to HHS data (see figure 4), as of 2011, 15 states allowed the use of state funds to provide Medicaid benefits for qualified immigrants who would otherwise be ineligible because of their immigration status – including the fact that they had resided in the United States for less than five years (note that New Jersey is included in HHS’ list of states that provide state-funded Medicaid coverage to recent immigrants, but New Jersey has changed that rule and no longer does so). So if your grandmother has a limited income, don’t rule out Medicaid as an option until you check with your state Medicaid office.

Its the same with Medicare ,same guidelines, posted wrong paragraph . If you cant pay for it in most blue states and some red the state will pay for it. Especially in places like Minnesota and the likes .

You may not know me directly. But yes My spouse and I have paid close to half a million in taxes and my parents when here would be here on my dime. And you are rolling us in with the rest of the lot. I'm all for limiting sibling migration without merit. I would propose amendment to the sibling visa program, where education and language skills count towards earning points (in addition to other skills). Anyone not meeting those standards gets their application dropped. We'll see a quick improvement in the backlog.

I know people on this forum tend to hate on undocumented immigrants, but I still don't get why it's perhaps acceptable to benefit from someone's brilliant (and highly educated) minds, but it's ok to take advantage of strong backs and financial need of people who cross from poorer countries?  Large parts of our economy are based on having undocumented workers desperate to earn money, but it's considered ok to use 'em up and deport them. 

Sorry, I know this thought is outside what was mostly being discussed so far, but the discussion of what it means to be a community and not just a business made me think of it.

Basically you were referencing the official federal government guidelines but in practice from state to state it varies heavily and most have some form of Medicare for old and young immigrants newly arrived or not.

The reason for the hate is the mode of their arrival. Were they not here, would our economy collapse? No. They are making themselves available and undercutting those who are here legally. They are throwing themselves at the US of A. What if I came to your house and painted it without your permission or without you asking of me... and then I expected a fair compensation... would you pay me? (maybe once). Would you pay me everyday? no you would get sick of me
