Why wouldn't you file for citizenship?

I didn't want to call out anyone specifically but a couple of responses said they didn't want to, not that they couldn't.  That is what made me think about it.

I guess it just isn’t a huge priority, being from NZ.   NZ is tied with the US in the 2023 passport rankings.

Advantages would be voting and not having to renew every ten years.  I’m sure husband will do it soon- it’s a line item on our weekend task list, along with painting interior trim and completing the insurance paperwork on our travel trailer that was pierced by a fir limb in a windstorm.

Yes, that's why my wife was thinking of passing on citizenship. Indonesia doesn't allow dual citizenship for adults, and only citizens can only own property there. She ultimately decided the benefits from becoming a US citizen outweighed any upside to remaining an Indonesian citizen.

Another reason is if one has family pressure to sponsor relatives for immigrant visas. One way to avoid that pressure is to not become a citizen. It might sound trivial, but as many threads can attest, some families are really pushy about that kind of thing!

That family pressure notion is an excellent point- one which I would have never thought of!

I could also see people having issues with the whole "willing to bear arms, etc." if the law requires questions. I will definitely have to think hard about whether I want to get an exception to the "bearing arms" part if I ever get the chance to naturalize.

I've been going back and forth on whether to file or not to file for a while now, and that's one of the main points.

That, and the whole 'Pledge of Allegiance' thing honestly.

I also forgot the ones who are perhaps in their 50s and up, aren't proficient in English and aren't eligible for exclusion (weren't LPRs 15/20 years)

I can speak from experience, with my brother. He never became citizen. He also never knew which country to call home.

I can resonate with that. US is my 4th country where I lived a significant chunk of my life. Within each country I lived in different cities. I consider planet Earth my home 😁 I regularly meet people people really struggling to comprehend it...

No need to perform jury duty

This.  THIS.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

No, but the only people that care are those that are filing ROC.  That specifically is why I posted it there and even mentioned that in the OP.

Saying "I hate you" would probably violate the VJ Terms of Service. :P

Which country? My wife was called in both 2021 and 2022.  I was also called but I used the juicy "I am not a US citizen" reason to excuse myself.

In any case, it's something to consider.
