https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/covid-19-vaccine-90-percent-effective-first-analysis-pfizer-says-n1247075

The drug company Pfizer said Monday that early analysis showed its vaccine candidate for Covid-19 is more than 90 percent effective at preventing infection.

The news from the U.S. pharmaceutical giant and its German partner, BioNTech SE, was welcomed as a major step in the fight against a virus that has plagued the global economy, upended daily life for billions and killed 1.26 million people — nearly 240,000 in the United States alone.

Pfizer and BioNTech said in a joint statement that their preliminary findings have shown higher success rates than many had expected. People who received two doses as part of the trial saw 90 percent fewer symptomatic cases of Covid-19 than participants who were given a placebo, they said.

This is very good news.

Based on the 60 minutes story last night, this vaccine is in the mfg pipeline already.  I would love to see our seniors, first responders and healthcare workers get this before Christmas.

Edit:

I think this is the one that requires two doses, three weeks apart.

Looks like there will be some challenges.  This vaccine must be stored and transported at minus 70 degrees.

Wonder how expensive this vaccine will be.

We do that every day. Dry ice will stay below -70 degrees for 24 hours in properly validated transport coolers. They will probably have to overnight every shipment.

Supposedly it will be $20 a dose with a double dose for full treatment.

How convenient that it came just one week after election day..... Also earlier today they said that they were never part of project warpspeed but it turns out that that statement was false.

Very possibly will be an annual thing like the flu shot.  What I found interesting is that the flu shot is 30-60% effective annually, so if the 90% is correct for this new vaccine it could be much more effective.  The one thing I find troubling is how partisan this has become, Governor Cuomo's response to the announcement today was nothing short of horrible, but I suppose if he and Newsome in CA keep this vaccine out of their respective states until they are satisfied politically, it means more for the other states.

This would be the first mRNA vaccine to get approval. The benefits of a mRNA vaccine for covid-19 are that it produces a strong T-cell response, and it is easier and quicker to upscale production. Large quantities could be produced in a couple of months compared to 1-2 years for conventional vaccines. There are still a lot of unknowns that can only be answered through trials. It looks like a promising development for the pandemic.

I had heard potentially 50 million doses by the end of this year.  I am not sure when they took the plunge and started production, and of course that will not go just to the US, but it certainly is a good start, but it will take time.

Disgraceful.

Cuomo would rather see body count rise than COVID vaccine under Trump

It’s probably the lowest thing Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ever done, and that’s saying something. On Monday morning, when everyone else was celebrating the spectacular news that Pfizer’s vaccine for COVID-19 looks 90 percent effective, Cuomo, as is typical, reverted to politics.

“We can’t let this vaccine plan go forward the way Trump is planning it,” Cuomo said. “We need to fix it or stop it before it does damage.”

First he let people die in nursing homes because of his ineptitude. Now Cuomo wants the body count to keep climbing because God forbid President Trump oversees a vaccine effort.

Anyone else notice how no one is talking that much about the flu this year?
