Question on Court Marriage and AOS

Does it look bad when filing AOS if you only do a court marriage and not a big huge wedding or reception after entering as a k1? I know people have different reasons for doing different things. If you choose to do a simple court marriage with only one side of parents there, is that a bad thing? Would it be looked down upon as not being a genuine relationship? It would be great to hear from those who have done AOS after K1 have to say.

No. We did court marriage, didn't show any photos or anything. AOS'ed without issue. Doesn't matter as long as you marry within the 90 days. How you choose to is entirely up to you.

06/30/2016 : I-129F Packet Sent

11/08/2016 : Interview - APPROVED!

11/23/2016 : POE - Dallas, Texas

From sending of I-129F petiton to POE - 146 days.

 

02/03/2017 - Married 

02/24/2017 - AOS packet sent

06/01/2017 - EAD/AP Combo Card Received in mail

12/06/2017 - I-485 Approved

12/14/2017 - Green Card Received in mail - No Interview

Not looked down upon at all. My wife and I got married in Vegas, next best thing to a court wedding. Only had my immediate family attend and a cousin of hers. Didn't submit any of the wedding details for AOS other than marriage certificate and approved no questions asked about the wedding.

Whether you have 400 people, 30 people, or just 2 witnesses in a courtroom does not change if the marriage is bona fide or not. Many people opt for the small or very small weddings, with some doing larger celebration/renewal of vows later.

We had no questions about our wedding besides the date. It's not their place to judge how you decide to marry as long as you're married. I personally think our courthouse wedding was more romantic than a big show off party woulda been.

You can get married in a courthouse with no family present.  There is no requirement for a "big wedding" or reception for that matter.

We had a 5 minute court wedding, just us two. USCIS doesn't care how you do it, they're only interested in proof that you got legally married within those 90 days.

the big wedding is no evidence of anything to USCIS at the end of the day. Not for AOS and not for ROC. The evidence relies more on the financial co-mingling. That is where you should concentrate on. Good evidence of bonafide marriage. Wedding pictures and such, have very little weight on proof.

Exactly, keep it simple. I'm doing a drive thru wedding. I'm not even wasting time getting out of the car. Who wants to find parking, walk to the court house and deal with that. And I can grab a double cheeseburger on the way out. Maybe a side of fries.

Pretty sure you can biggie size it for free it it's part of a wedding package.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

There are traffic lights here in LA longer than our courthouse wedding. I wouldn’t worry about it.

as long as its a legal marriage, they dont care. (as long as its within 90 days) 

 

we will get married at the courthouse immediately upon him moving here (most likely February or march), then have a wedding later in the summer (end of july)

04/09/2019    NOA1 received/check cashed i 485 and 130 (direct adjustment)

11/7/2019      Interview- Norfolk

11/10/2019    APPROVED (notification rec'd 11/10, approval dated 11/8)

DONE FOR TWO YEARS!!! ;)

 

Filed everything ourselves with no RFE's or delays.

 

CR1 for Child under 21 (20 at time of filing)- Filed by LPR Spouse for his son

4/4/20     Mailed packet

4/12/20   NOA1 rec'd

10/14/21 (havent heard anything... when do i start to get worried?)

9/15/22 APPROVED! Now to wait for NVC and interview....

My husband and I got married at the courthouse with only my sister and brother-in-law in attendance.  We even AOS-ed without an interview.   As @Alabamak1 noted, the important thing is the commingling of finances.  Have your fiance get a ssn as soon as possible after arrival and add him/her to your bank/credit card accounts.

I had court wedding with 3 friends witnesses. IO asked me it was my special day and none of family was there.

I think some will ask, some wont really care. Just be prepared to be safe. My case, I gave her my reasons and she was convinced in the end.

USCIS I-129F NOA2 Date:  April 27th, 2017 (105 Active days )

NVC Received: May 19th, 2017

Interview Date : July 28th, 2017  - Approved

AOS Journey: 

AOS package (I 485, I765, I131) sent: Jan 10th, 2018

USCIS Lockbox Chicago received: Jan 12th, 2018

NOA 1 hard copies received: Jan 22nd, 2018

Bio-metric Appointment Letter received: Jan 26th, 2018
