What fly by night firm are you using?  Our mortgage company insisted on a scanned green card.

With that said - what’s the mortgage have to do with the title.  You can be on the title of the home without being on the mortgage.

Good lord, that sounds shady and completely obnoxious on their part. I'm so sorry. Do you have, or can you obtain a state ID? Getting a state ID in MD at least, is a pretty straightforward process provided you've got the documentation. Surely they wouldn't reject that. Green card is a federally recognized document that proves who you are and there should be no reason they would reject it, except it seems out of ignorance and I should think you could complain to someone about this. The law is the law. They are discriminating and personally I wouldn't dare do business with them.

For me, it's about the stability.  As @SusieQQQ stated, it eliminates any concerns of a threat to your ability to be here.  For me, it's not about the US or the citizenship so much. It's about being with my husband, the center of my universe, and knowing that nothing can interfere with us being together.

The more practical 'little things' side of it is just how much less hassle it is when you don't have to prove legal status. There are things my husband does in everyday life and he is not subject to as many screenings or additional information requirements based on his status.

One of several examples: We have just gone through a real estate deal and he was a little taken aback that even though he signed security and responsibility for the loan in his sole name, I had to submit REAMS of paperwork before they would even look at our case.

Your miles may vary and are no lesser for having different reasons for being here. Therefore I would suggest determining the biggest reason being here in the US is most important to you and then figure out from there whether citizenship adds any advantage or not.

Just follow the path to US citizenship. Your Candian citizenship will be unaffected. The US will not recognize your Canadian citizenship afterwards, but you are not required to give it up.

I think a lot of that answer depends where you come from, given that (unlikely as it is) a green card can be revoked and it is not a permanent guarantee to remain in the US. For us, having a stable developed country with a good higher education system (for the kids) and with the bonus of a passport that doesn’t require visas to go just about everywhere like our home country one, was a big incentive to naturalize. If I came from a Western European country or Australia or Canada, I would not have the same incentives.

always put the case # on each and every page with both names and both DOB's

Yeah my name change isn't really a different name as well, just removing my middle name. i tried looking up  judicial oath ceremony schedules online but nothing shows up, my Immigration officer told me i should receive the oath ceremony schedule letter a week or 2  after my interview but nothing so far.
Good luck to you hopefully you get your interview schedule soon.

As far as i understand, not all the interviewers have authority to grant approval on the spot. Sounds like your interviewer had to pass your file to someone who is to grant the approval. Hang in there. The waiting is the worst. How many years of suspense now?!?!

The unrestricted SS card + valid driver's license meets the I-9 criteria. They are prohibited from requiring a specific document.

As for why employers ask for a green card still, I would wager that it almost always is because they don't know any better.

There is no way to tell for sure and you have to ask yourself, is it worth risking everything for a 2 week trip? To me, after the long ordeal with immigration, throwing it all away now is just not worth it.

It is stressful and sucks but this is a sacrifice you are just going to have to make. Immigrate successfully or be a bridesmaid. At this point you have no control on changing the dates around when you need to be in a certain place. When the choice is made to immigrate to another country a lot of things will get disrupted, however, everything related to immigrating must be first priority.

Your safest bet is to tell them you can't make it. This will allow the bride to plan accordingly.

I absolutely believe that each service center has its own way (and time scale) for submitting the data after doing biometrics. I was gathering my stuff while the lady who did mine told me I could go and she was just updating everyting on the main system. My status changed almost immediately online.

There has always been a bit of a difference between the old and new sites.

My status on the old site still says the thing about being actively processed while the new site says my biometrics have been reviewed, etc.

It's been like that since I attended my appointment and I expect it will stay like that. Same thing happened with ROC and even now, the status on the two sites for that completed case read differently.

This is actually a very valuable piece of advice, neatly wrapped up.

Make sure you do what you can to avoid secondary. There's never a guarantee but a common pitfall that leads travelers to additional questions and screening is packing things into the bags that should not be brought into the country - usually food!  Make sure you declare everything, pack your own bags, dress appropriately and generally don't do or bring anything that draws unnecessary attention to yourself.

    Happy travels

Yeah the medical and police certificate were valid for the interview ... Jan 30th 2018. They're well out of date. I'll be arranging new ones as soon as I'm able in a day or two.

Congrats Richard!  Wow ... what a journey for you!  You probably need a new Police certificate. Not sure when your last one was dated. I believe they are valid for a year. The medical will likely need to be redone as well.  Wait and see where the petition goes next and I guess you just follow the prompts from there. Wishing you all the best!

Did you ever find out what the hold-up was? I never understand this black hole where some petitions and applications go with no explanation!

That's a good thing!  I think we get so caught up in being separated from our spouses/finace(e)s, worrying about the timelines and every step of this process and willing it to be over that it's only when you're almost ready to fly that the reality sets in.

For me it never did and you either start dealing with leaving your people behind before you go, or you start after you've left. I wish I'd "felt" more before I left.  Just roll with whatever you feel. The sadness is not badness
It's also not a disloyalty to your new life to feel sadness about saying goodbye.

I agree with everything @Wuozopo suggested!

If you are flying with one of the main scheduled airlines like BA/BA/United etc, do yourself a favor and go buy a cheap suitcase, fill it up and pay for the extra bag. It is SO much cheaper than shipping things over and mailing stuff adds up a lot, really quickly.

    DO BRING:
Whatever you like to lounge around the house in. Those old, stretched pants and baggy oversized top with holes in it may seem like a silly thing to put in when you are about to get married and have to choose what to take and what to leave behind, but trust me ... it takes some time to adjust and if you suddenly go from working full time to sitting around at home for months unable to get out, work, go shopping etc independently, there is much comfort in the things you have that are familiar. Same goes for a favorite coffee mug etc.

Bring clothes that are suitable for the climate you are moving to. For me, moving from Scotland to Florida .... there were things I could have left behind!

    DON'T BOTHER TO BRING
Any small  electrical appliances like straighteners, hairdryer etc.  They just don't work here and you can get way better items for less money.

Finally, and very importantly, PLEASE make sure you enjoy your last days with your family and friends before you leave them behind.  I was so stressed with a year long process and all the delays from backlogged cases when I left, I was a wreck and my family got the worst of me to hold onto as their last memory of me for a few years.
