Hi there,

I'm currently on an AOS process and I just received my Work permit (765), i need to update my Social Security card and i see on their website that: 'To prove your U.S. immigration status, you must show us your current U.S. immigration document (photocopies are not accepted)''

So, do I really have to mail my EAD? How long does it take?

Thank you!

Call your local SSA office.  Explain the situation and they should provide you with a mailing address for the SS5 form, and allow you to send a photocopy of the EAD card.  In a week or so (or later depending on your local office's backlog/workload), you should get a call confirming the application and scheduling an in-office appointment.  You will need to bring the original EAD card to the appointment for verification.

Just wait until you need to update your SSN profile post naturalization then see what happens when you don’t send in originals.

We made an appointment for our local office. No way did we trust the mail to send in any original documents or cards. Once we explained the situation they let us make an appointment.

oh and it took like 2-3 weeks to get the new social security card in the mail.

My second attempt at updating my SS profile: after a couple of hours of being on hold, cut off,  redialing and so on, I was told that the next available appointment was 10 weeks away. Instead, I drove to their office that same day and used their drop box.. they sent back my documents via UPS overnight mail three days later (that was a passport) and I received my replacement SSN within a week.

as others have suggested, give them a call and see what they can do.

listen, to each their own. I personally would never mail original documents. I’ve had had and actually right now I’m having a very unpleasant experience with the postal system in this country. So what I did when I got my green card was to request an in- person appointment through my Congressman. Easy peasy.

Yep. And if they don’t want to give an appointment, get your congressman involved.

Yes and they sent me a letter stating they needed my actual naturalization certificate. I decided to apply for my passport first then use that

Yes. I sent my original EAD two weeks ago. I got it back from the SSA 3 days later. You must send original EAD
