We are allowed to cash the stimulus check, correct?

Hi guys,

In order to be extra cautious during our time of adjusting status we just want to make sure we are not breaking any rules. As far as we know, since we are supposed to be financially independent with no financial assistance allowed from the government, will cashing this stimulus check hurt our case in any way? I'm guessing the answer is no, since this is an unprecedented time, but I just wanted to check with more knowledgeable people on all this.

I did also have another question if anyone knows the answer to this. I have been sent biometrics dates for two separate documents, one for I765, and one for I131, both dates have now gone past because of the virus. We can not reach anybody to ask about this and again, figure we won't get in trouble for this since the offices were closed for both of the dates, but we called the USCIS help line and all they said was that new appointment dates would be sent out within 3 weeks. We did not need to request a new date since this was not something we wanted, right? We were ready to go, but the offices were closed. Hoping that we weren't considered as 'didn't show up' or anything.

Eligibility for the stimulus checks is based upon your tax residency and income. It is not a public charge issue.

You may want to read over the documents signed again. Certain aid is permitted. Certain aid is not. "from the government" is far too broad to be meaningful.

Also unless you mailed your tax return, you won't be getting a check.

Not true.   Its having provided direct deposit information, not whether you efiled or mailed.

YMMV

those living on SSA or SSI will get one even if do not have to file taxes

and this check is different than getting public assistance like section 8 housing and medicaid and food stamps

if this was public assistance . then no one would be eligible under that rule

From what I understand it's not about if you filed via mail or online, it's about if IRS has your bank info on hand. If IRS has your bank info (no matter if you filed via mail or online) you will not get a check.

And what does mailing your return have to do with getting a check?   Answer is NOTHING!!

It is all about having provided direct deposit information.

YMMV
