I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this but I'm new to this whole process as we're also just waiting for our NOA2.

 

I understand how important insurance is and how expensive medical fees can get in the US because I spent a year there when I had my internship (J1 visa) and we were required to pay for insurance that covers our entire stay. However, with the K1, I've been seeing different things: 1. It's not considered as "immigrant" until the AOS stage (which makes sense) 2. K1 visa holders need to obtain insurance right away even before coming to the US bc they're considered immigrants already. Idk what to follow, really.

 

I'm from the Philippines and I think some of you are familiar with how it works here when it comes to insurance. I don't have one and my mom has me as her dependent. I just want to be ready for when we get our NOA2. My questions are:

1. Do I need to get one before going to the US?

2. If yes, will it be okay to use a visitor's insurance first? I saw visitorscoverage online. Does anyone know if this will be okay to use?

3. If I don't have to, will it be okay to just wait to be added to my fiance's insurance (after we get married, of course)? I have my SSN already.

The general advice and this has changed nothing is get married asap and get added to his insurance.

It probably won't be that bad if I can add by wife to my employer sponsored plan (no SS) come open enrollment period. However, I'd be in a pickle if they don't allow me to add her without a SS number.

I think they ought to fix that before making such changes. However, the government isn't known for making logical decisions.

It’s usually once or twice a year. 
Or you may be able to add based on “loss of coverage” if she was covered elsewhere. 
You won’t have an issue at all. 🙏

I got married in January 2019. Still waiting for the i130 Nebraska nightmare to be over. Who know when she'll be here. Early next year, late next, 2021. God bless the current administration. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

I think that's when open enrollment is for us.

 

Health Insurance is not a big thing in Pakistan.

I just did it and am looking at it now if you want me to send it to you. 
Ask HR at work. 
I wasn’t aware of the last one either until I added my daughter recently

I think it can be argued that it is a change in household.  It would also qualify under the other things mentioned above.
