In UK they do check, though it's quick look for things you should have down there. No pelvic exam, not even touching.. They just check if you boy/girl. Nurse said they have few transsexuals trying to sneak trough as ladies, so that's why they are checking.

That is the part I just don't understand. I am assuming the petitioner would know what gender the beneficiary is, so why check?

Sorry, but I am just baffled. I find the whole "checking the gender" just ridiculous.

And if it were about STI why not just check that with the syphilis.

Well, blood tests for STDs are not always accurate (syphilis in particular included), but signs of an STD infection can sometimes be observed with a visual inspection of the genital area (depends on the STD and the stage of development of the disease, etc.).

P.S. Not gonna post pics here, but just google syphilis genitals and go to image search if you're curious. NSFW obviously.

Yes they do check. The doctor at Knightsbridge kind of implied that the checking was more along the lines for STDs or testicular cancer in the case of men. I do believe it does have something to do regarding gender fraud, which I can imagine while rare, does happen. Kind of funny but, by the end of this process the government sort of knows everything about our spouses one way or another. I know for some it's embarrassing and difficult to think about, but it has to be done... and at the end of the day, it's a doctor who has seen everything. My suggestion is to ask the doctor about it, perhaps they'd clarify.
