Sounds like you're trying to justify an act of violence.  It doesn't matter if he was provoked, that's not a socially (and legally) acceptable way to behave.  But don't listen to me (and please don't hurt me) - tell it to the judge!

Reading a little closer, it says that the employment letters must list (among other things) "marital status" and "whom to notify in case of an emergency". Maybe this is part of proving a relationship under the three year filing rule? My husband's work wouldn't agree to put his marital status down saying that they couldn't verify that info, but hopefully we'll be okay anyway.

Why did you say you were single when you were married?  I know you said you didn't have the marriage certificate yet, but you could have just told the officer that.  To a neutral observer, it looks like you had something to hide and it's not clear why. 

That's a big if.  Few people have $1170 between their couch cushions.

She did.  There is nothing to update since she's not a citizen yet.  In fact, if she does that she may be jeopardizing her citizenship because non-citizens are leglly prohibited from representing themselves as citizens.

Agreed.  It always baffled me how anyone who's been in this country for more than 3 years can find the test difficult.  For kicks and giggles, google the UK citizenship test.  Now THAT's difficult. 

To be honest, just listen to the evening news and Sunday news shows regularly, and one should be half the way there (and more engaged in contemporary political issues). The history you can read up from the citizenship booklet.

I've seen many posts where people complain about getting these and want to know how to turn them off.  You're the first one who misses them.

Material, for example, to good moral character.  If she lied on purpose (why? that's what many of us are asking), is that good moral character?  Who knows.
