Good morning everyone!

My husband and I had been hired at a big company (top 10 best place to work in the US).

Our start day for training will be Monday July 11th. Everything is all set to start including signed agreements, background checks, etc

I got yesterday in the mail my USCIS n400 interview letter NOA saying my interview will be Monday July 18th. So i couldn't even get too excited because now we are going to have to say something at the new job and  I do not think is very nice to be asking for a day off when we didn't even started.

And i thought you guys can give me another opinion on this.

Even when i think it could be a good reason to reschedule USCIS i think is always better to try first move my own schedule before asking for USCIS to reschedule seeing how apparently that's a lottery. And i am at this very last step and don't want to ruin it.

My husband don't want to ruin his new job either so we are discussing these 3 ideas:

1) to send an email to our new manager (that we haven't even met yet) explaining everything

2) to ask human resources who had been dealing with us all the time to see what they think or if they want to push our start date

3) to wait on first day of training and say it there in person that we need next Monday off.

Either way we still never said we are a couple.

We got same shift schedule and we would like to keep that as well.

I know! Not everything can be JUST easy right?

Thanks a lot everybody for reading.

Have a nice day and best luck!

I know in my company, they look at events such as naturalization as fairly important in their employee's lives.  Since this is your N400, your spouse is not required to attend the interview, so this would only impact you.  If you know your future manager, I would get in touch with them, explain the situation and ask for the day or at least a half day (if your logistics allow for it, the N400 interview is not very long) off to attend the interview as trying to re-schedule with USCIS is really a pain.  There are so many stories of people contacting USCIS to reschedule, but USCIS's internal communication did not work and the IO scheduled for the case denied it as the applicant did not show up and they were not notified that the case has been rescheduled.

This is my opinion only, but I would do whatever I could to attend the scheduled interview.

Good Luck!

Hi Dashinka! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me. I really appreciate your thoughts. I am pretty sure this company will understand that too. It's just uncomfortable having to ask for a day off when we haven't even started.

And as my husband he must go with me because i applied my n400 based on marriage.

The uscis office is almost hour and a half away and the interview is at 10.30am and the shift is 7am to 3.30pm so it's right in the middle, will see what the manager has to say.

As for now will keep my fingers crossed!!

Thank you again!

i will try option no. 2 and reach out to HR. easier than emailing a new hiring manager that you never met yet

in my opinion, easier to push the starting job than come to work and then ask for a day off.

So meanwhile I asked someone that referred us from inside the company and she asked around for us as well and told me to just go there in our first day and tell  the manager and they won't have a problem with that and with knowing we are a married couple. She said is not a big deal.

We applied for the same role separately and were never asked for marital status. I think they can't ask that when hiring

We just didn't say it yet to anybody besides who referred us who knows me from a past job.

Thank you all for your help!

Yeah, they cannot ask or generally don't ask, anything about one's personal life anymore especially when making hiring decisions (might be exceptions for criminal history).  There is no issue with being a married couple working for the same company unless and until one spouse is in a management position above the other spouse.  That being said, it appears you have a plan, so good luck on the interview.   Btw, even if applying for citizenship as the spouse of a USC, there is no requirement for them to be there, and in fact USCIS will most likely not allow them in the interview.  Now if you also have an I751 pending, then it is a good idea for the spouse to attend in the event of a joint I751/N400 interview.

Good Luck!

Most probably they will send us to different departments after the training.

Already have i751 approved some months ago. We were interviewed for almost hour and half so they pretty much knows everything about us. I was almost positive my husband has to go at least to show his neck there. Now you say they most likely not allowed him in the interview? He will kill me if i make him go for nothing 😂

Read the interview NOA carefully.  It says to bring proof of your current marriage (certificate) and any proof of legally ending any previous marriages.  When my wife had her N400 interview, it was initially a joint I751 interview and I was invited for that portion, but I was escorted back to the waiting area as my wife had her N400 interview.

Good Luck!

You could just tell them jobs are often super willing to accommodate things before you are on a schedule. I would attend that interview even if i need to call out 🤷🏾‍♂️ But thats just me.

You're right.the letter doesn't says to bring your spouse anywhere. I always read before it was good to bring him anyways at least to say hi and say his name.

It's absolutely a must when is a combo interview.

Thank you for your help!!!

This is a good early test to determine if you really want to work for this company.  If they give you a lot of grief because you need a day off for your naturalization ceremony and for your spouse to attend such an important life event, then maybe you need to think harder about working for this company.

I would  suggest reaching out to HR, because you've already been communicating with them. Work it out with them and then reach out to the manager to let them know, just out of courtesy. Then, you'll be able to enjoy your ceremony with no worries!
