How to get a marriage licence without a SSN?

My fiance finally arrived in USA two weeks ago. We plan to get married soon. But the problem is social security offices are closed and she cannot get a SSN. To apply for a marriage licence,  we need a SSN (This is what the county clerk site mentions). I do not know what to do. Any advice? Thank you. Alex

It's probably the same as everywhere. A SSN is only required if you have one.

If they for whatever reason really want yours then go and get married somewhere else.

I'd call the office and ask for reassurance. I'm in Florida and we got our marriage license without one because my SSN card was super delayed. I can't remember if they let me leave the SSN space blank, or use my A-number instead.

My husband didn’t need one either, since he didn’t have his yet. Clerk I talked to just said they put in 000-00-000 if that’s the case.

Call and explain the situation. I've heard some people will insist you giving them a SSN number for a marriage license but if they do, persist — you're only supposed to have to give one if you HAVE one, as far as I'm aware. 

 

I personally got married in Georgia and they never even asked, all they had to see was my passport to issue the license.

 

Like everyone says, you can always go to a different county to get married if all else fails! Good luck.

Sec. 2.004. APPLICATION FORM. (a) The county clerk shall furnish the application form as prescribed by the bureau of vital statistics.

(b) The application form must contain:

(1) a heading entitled "Application for Marriage License, ____________ County, Texas";

(2) spaces for each applicant's full name, including the woman's maiden surname, address, social security number, if any, date of birth, and place of birth, including city, county, and state;

Take a printout of the stature as offered above to the office and present if asked for a social security number. You should not be disqualified from someone who doesn't know the statures. Just my opinion.

Got married in Virginia a week ago and didn’t need a SSN at all. All they asked from me is some form of ID. All I had was my passport on me and that’s all they needed

I did not need a ssn in Texas.  Go to a different county.

When we got married in Florida we used his passport as ID.  No SS number required.

As others have said, you don't need a SSN. Here in NC they want it if you have it, but if you do not, you just have to explain (recent arrival from overseas is good explanation, obviously).

 

In my case I had an SSN from having had J1 visa 20 years earlier, but it definitely wasn't required.

Any issues I'm still doing marriages on a pretty regular basis. Las Vegas just opened up today ( Casinos and stuff, everything else already open). I can have you married and certificate in hand in less than an hour!

I think someone reported here that Idaho requires an SSN if you're legally able to get one (not sure if that's actually true) which would keep a K-1 beneficiary from getting married without one, but that's the closest to requiring one I've ever heard of.

 

You certainly don't need one in CA (Anastasia had applied for one the day before we got married, but didn't have the card yet obviously).
