Covid: are citizens getting jobs before newly AOS'ers?

I'm wondering if US citizens will get preference on jobs, over people newly in the country who have just gotten 2yr Green Cards? It's hard enough finding work at all, but to think I don't have a chance because Im not a citizen yet is kinda depressing. Thoughts?

The right to work is the right to work. It depends on a lot of things and not how long you've been in the country. What is your experience? Schooling? Work history? Skills? What type of job is it? The only area where you may need to be a citizen to get the job is some government jobs.

Majority of jobs don’t ask if you are a us citizen verses a new resident. Now you most likely won’t get a federal job since majority of those require being a citizen but that has nothing to do with covid. I’m sure if you apply to a grocery store and you have somewhat people skills you will be hired.

I’ve hired a lot of people over the years for now what is my 8th company.  
The offer is made to the candidate after interviews without knowing their background are or where they come from.  


HR collects that data after the offer is made and accepted. Background checks are run, and the documents to set up payroll are submitted after the background check passes and the candidate starts work.  I myself had to bring that stuff in and fill out those forms and sign up for benefits on my first day.  

Point:  I’m not sure there is a way to show preference or not show preference.

 

Jobs limited to USC’s post as such.  The vast majority are not.

The main disadvantage of many people who just got their green card is that they don't have enough references in the US to "endorse" their application (mainly for certain skilled jobs). It doesn't help that in those cases, their previous work experience and education come from abroad as well. 

 

That said, your chances of success will  depend a lot on what kind of job you apply for, the demand for the job in the area you're in, and your own profile, of course.

 

In Education, if you and a person with references and work experience in the US are competing for the same job, there is a big chance you will not be selected. If you go for a job in Events for instance then that might not matter much. Either way, it's not because the other candidate is a USC and you are not. The disadvantage lies on what they can provide that recent LPRs cannot.

Great reply, jobs will be skeptical to hire people who no experience state side, or maybe think you need sponsorship.

There's no way to prove the company is showing prejudice.

Tracking Number Received: Via email notice and website the afternoon of Jan 4th    Visa Delivered: Friday Jan 5th Mexico City

That's great that you do that, that's how it should be, but it doesn't mean that the prejudice doesn't exist and isn't real, it's obvious when someone sees a resume and all the experience is in another country.

It would be illegal for an employer to discriminate based on nationality or work authorization. The legal liability the employer faces for doing so is not worth it.

I'm sure it does happen, or at least there are some places that may try to do so, but it's really not widespread IMO. It's an exception where it happens, not he norm. And again, if it can be shown, they would be setting themselves up for trouble.

 

tldr: You and a citizen have essentially equal access to a job if everything else is exactly equal.*

*Certain positions with government agencies do require you to be a USC, as do some security clearances.

what kind of job are you talking about,  my wife came from her country as a marketing executive assistant,  her English isn't so good so she had no choice but to apply for a retail job.   Sometimes in a new country you have to start fresh and work your way up with experience.

 

My Wife applied to CVS she just got her 2 year green card,  originally they said thank you for your interest in our company ect. etc sounded like they were not interested in hiring her., a few weeks later after Covid 19 started to pick up she got an offer to accept a position at a CVS near our home, CVS said they were hiring 50k extra employees.   

 

Unfortunately she did not accept the offer due to the high risk of contact with sick customers. so yeah regular everyday jobs like this don't usually hire US citizens over immigrants you speak English pretty well you got a good chance.  

 

Same with Macy's she was so excited but they cancelled on her because the Mall the Macy's was in was closing in a few days.

The one disadvantage that newly AOSed/EADed people have is that they have often been out of the job market for many months. In many industries that can be a huge problem. That was my main reason for not doing a K-1 visa - being out of my industry for 6 months or so would set me back several years in reality.

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

 

Now a US citizen!
