Let the IRS deal with the tax stuff. Move on.

 

I don’t blame you for investigating him. Trust, but verify. That does NOT mean somebody should invade somebody’s privacy (like searching their phone), but researching public records is open game. I did the same and am upfront about it - and others have done the same for me and I’m fine with that. I have nothing to hide, but even if I did, it’s not something I would hide from a fiancé or spouse.

 

Surprises are for parties, not bad news.

 

Also, somebody that is evading taxes and doesn’t care is a red flag about other things they may do when they think they won’t get caught. Obviously this guy doesn’t want to live on the up-and-up. It sounds like you don’t want that life, so all the more power to you.

Whether it was 7 or 20 or 27 years ago, what he did was illegal and you had every right to know about his criminal past.  Since he didn’t tell you, you obviously had to find out somehow. Good for you!

Why would she be audited?  She doesn’t even live in the US and file taxes.

People have been using background investigation companies for over 20 years to check out a boyfriend, fiance, etc. I myself helped a friend in the Ukraine check out a USC fiancee for a $35 fee, 15 years ago. By the way, he came back clean as a whistle but she still didn't marry him. She's now happily married to a man from Ukraine.

 

What the OP did is entirely normal and her anger at being betrayed in a relationship is also pretty normal. Maybe we should all move on.

If he is unemployed and not filing taxes - ok. But if he has a source of income and hasnt filed taxes in 3 years and have a prior drug conviction..... well one should piece those things together......
