Also be aware the process takes 12 - 14 months. And doesn't matter what wedding, as long as its legal.

Doesn't matter where you get married. 

 

You asked about the steps to obtain the Cr1 visa, so that's why I linked the guide.

It must be a legal marriage, with a marriage certificate (or equivalent local document) as documentation.

Doesn't matter where, what kind, how large/small. Just as long as it's legal and produces a marriage certificate/etc.

 

As for steps - first, obviously, is to get married and have legal proof on hand. Then review the guides for the CR1 visa, which gives you step by step how to apply/petition, and so on.

Been there, done that. A couple of things to consider after you get married in Colombia...

 

1. If she is changing her name, process all the legal documents associated with that immediately after the wedding.

2. Have her apply for a new passport with her new name.

3. Then file CR1.

 

It might take a month or two but you'll have less headaches down the road. Dealing with name change issues or expiring passports during the immigration process were two things my wife and I didn't have to deal with.

 

By the way, we didn't have a religious wedding. We hired a civil judge to marry us in front of about 40 guests.

Maybe she lives along the Columbia River, or is enrolled in Columbia University. It would make this whole immigration thing much easier for him.

How did you  change the last name, in Colombia or USA, I’m from Colombia and I got married in February, I haven’t changed my last name and we are about to file for the green card, thanks for the info

There's not a lot you can do to get the visa rolling along any faster.   Make sure all needed documents will be available.  If she's divorced, get the correct court documents. You can start having documents translated.  Otherwise, save money for fees, fees, fees. 

 

Otherwise check for anything you'll need to marry as a foreign person in Colombia.  Some countries want more than just a passport. 

 

Having lived in Colombia, I can tell you that you will make your wife (and USCIS and NVC) happier by spelling it Colombia (not Columbia).
