Help! I lost my green card

So, as awkward as it is I had my card on me on the bus. My wallet disappeared, and my green card with it. Humiliated for my naivety I paid for the replacement and went for the new biometrics and everything.

 

The main problem is: my working permit expires in 2 weeks, and HR communicated me that if I am not able to present elegible documents I will be fired.

In dismay I called USCIS and a very rude lady told me that it will take AT LEAST one year to receive a new copy. In front of my panicking she told me to get papers from my workplace to try to expedite the process - but she doubts it is going to make any difference she mumbled.

 

I don't want to lose my job, I don't know what to do. I never had the time to renew my social security card, and it still says I need a DHS.

Do you have: A copy of the green card you lost, a copy of a police report, evidence that you have requested a new GC?

 

You didn't have time?? Go to the Social Security office ASAP!!!! Maybe they can help get you a new SS card..

I have a b/n copy of the card, I have been told it's not valid for anything. I have evidences that I requested a new card, all the Notices I got so far. I don't have a copy of the police report, but I guess I can ask for a copy to the Police.

 

I am afraid that without an original copy of my greencard I won't be "fixed" my SS.

Once you have a GC the EAD (work permit) is invalid, not sure what is going on, you complete the I9 use your GC why would they want to see it again?

I got hired on my working permit, I never had the chance to give them a copy of my GC because I lost it basically as soon as I received it (within 3 weeks).

Use other documents that are acceptable for I-9 purposes.

 

A driver's licence and social security card, for example.

I don't have a driving licence and my ss card is not updated and has the DHS restriction

You cannot use your SSN card if it has the valid for work only with DHS authorization on it..

 

 

Make an Info Pass appointment at your local USCIS office to receive a 1 year green card stamp, and file Form I-90 to replace lawful permanent resident card

Do you know how to get an Appointment at a USCIS Service Center? They will give you a stamp in your passport to say Employment Authorised or something like that. That can be shown to both your Employer and the SS Administration to remove your SS Restriction.

Service centres aren't open to the public. They would instead need to make an Infopass appointment at a field office.

 

The field office will likely need to see an I-90 NoA before they will give you an I-551 stamp, however.

No real downside if you do not, plenty if you lose it.
