Once 3 years hits, can people apply for naturalization anyway regardless of how long they have had the extension letter? Or do you need to have the 10 year green card first? Not quite sure how it works but trying to learn about it (even though we are still a long way away, as we are in AOS now)

I am actually pretty relieved that this will automatically occur for people who still have an I-751 stuck somewhere in the processing line. I completed my I-751 in July 2017 and biometrics appointment on August 10th of 2017 and have yet to have so much as a peep about my case changing or moving along. See my signature for specific dates in my ROC.

Given that local office appointments are becoming increasingly hard to get at some offices (my local one for instance seemingly never has open appointments despite checking at all times of the day from midnight though the end of the evening), it is a big burden off my shoulders that I will be receiving an extension automatically from USCIS. This luck of the draw business for an appointment seemed arbitrary and unfair to those of us who filed on time and did nothing wrong.

Perhaps someone could chime in, but in my case, I have an extension letter through October 15th of this year (2 year green card plus one year extension letter) - this new extension letter would add 6 more months onto my current extended expiry to make it expire April 15th of 2019, correct?

P.S. Big thanks to OP for posting this! What a relief!

I don't think they are that bad. This country probably receives the biggest number of immigrants and the department isn't there to handle ROC only. There are the dreamers issue going on, etc etc. They're busy.

I don’t think they’re that busy. Over one year for AOS and looks like no end in sight......:o

The way I read this:

- new filers will start getting 18 months extension letters from the get-go.

- Currently pending filers will get new extension letters.

Not sure what to think about this - on one hand it is good that USCIS tries to ease the burden of getting infopasses, stamps etc; on the other hand it clearly shows they are not focused on getting the I-751 processing time frames down to a reasonable level (which would be 6 months or less in my book).

Will also be interesting how long it'll take for the wider community (CBP, airlines, state agencies etc) to clue about new 18 months extension letters...

I wonder when the letters will come out. I suppose there's no way to know.

So one has to renew Driver Licenses for 6 months more? In the meantime, one files an N-400? This is what we did. The UPCIS Case update file said it would take 12 months. After the biometrics went in, they changed to 9 months for 'complete' processing.

Meanwhile, one can never get any appointments in NYC for a stamp even trying at any time of the day or night....this is a complete mess

I think this was a good move on their part based on the backlog and how long they are taking to process I-751s now.  I do wonder, though, why they couldn't make conditional green cards valid for 3 years instead of 2 years.  I realize that not everyone goes the marriage route and is interested in the citizenship path but for those of us that do, this would seem to make more sense.  We're now just about to get the 2 year conditional green card and in 2020 we'll be applying for RoC.  Unless something changes in the next 2 years and the timelines shrink, we'll be looking at 12-18 months to process for the 10 year card.  This means that we'll have to pay the fee for RoC, which likely won't get done before we can submit the N-400, and then pay the fee for the N-400.  I realize that all organizations need money to survive but I do feel like if you have a pending RoC and it has not been processed by the time you can apply for naturalization that the amount you paid for RoC should be transferred to your naturalization application.  Alternatively, though, just make the conditional green card 3 years and that will save on the number of applications that need to be processed, cut down on the time and paperwork involved, and help to streamline the process.

RaptureSongbird - ROC at 3 years and give people a chance to pick that or natz. My thoughts exactly. Yes they would lose out on those fees but they're meant to cover the cost of reviewing and adjudicating an application, not of making money, presumably. The issue is that would require a change in immigration law, and we know how difficult that is to pass - regardless of administration.

Question: If one has already gotten a I-551 stamp at an infopass appointment, will they still get a new extension letter? And if so, are both technically valid, or does one become invalidated?

My stamp is valid till June 2019, and if I get a new extension letter it will just be valid until December 2018.

It's useless...although the stamp still works just fine. Typically one would get thew stamp when the extension is about to expire anyway, and it is good for 1 year so it probably is valid longer than this change anyway.
