  1. (Some) abusers are also looking for "weaker" partners. New immigrants with little resources (support system, money, knowledge of the local laws) can be seen as easier victims. I'm convinced that some abusing sponsors deliberately seek the power imbalance.
  2. Same if you do other lucrative illegal activities . Paying taxes is often part of the money laundering process.
  3. That is also my understanding. Not condoning work, but if you are working, or have worked, without authorization, you are required to declare the income to the IRS.
  4. See also: https://www.benefits.gov/ Where is she coming from? Where is she planning to go (city, state)? - You will receive more accurate answers by providing a few details.
  5. Exactly. See "Replace a passport abroad" here: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/emergencies/lost-stolen-passport-abroad.html Edited to add: Your question is a repeat of what you have asked in a prior topic. I strongly suggest you contact your closest consulate/embassy: https://www.usembassy.gov/ They will be able to guide you on the documents you have, if it sufficient to return to the USA, or if you need anything else. Also, they can answer questions about where to go for support once you land. Best of luck to you.
  6. Good read. https://web.archive.org/web/20220717180736/https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/08/nyregion/brooklyn-homeless-shelter-friendship.html First part:
  7. Why do you feel you need a certificate? What makes you think you might not be a citizen?
  8. Millions of passengers, mistakes happen.
  9. Once I submit the documents, how long does it take them on average to return passport? Rarely less than 6-8 weeks. Your medical exam might be expired now, when did you do it?
  10. You might be losing thousands doing it this way though... .. For large amount transfers, you want to look at Norbert's Gambit. Here is an overview: https://www.pwlcapital.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/PWL_Bender-Bortolotti_Norbert-s-Gambit_BMO-InvestorLINE-RRSP_v06_hyperlinked.pdf
  11. Are you/is your partner eligible to another citizenship? Otherwise, I think all options have been discussed already

  13. You can always tell the new resident at your former address to be in touch if they get mail delivered for you.
  14. Mariage is a qualifying event, so you shouldn't have to wait.
  15. https://miracoalition.org/ is a great resource. I would reach out to them to ask if they know of a similar group in your area. Consulate also has a list of lawyer, might point you in the right direction. Best of luck.
  16. I have no idea what happened in this case, just many ways it could have happened/happens everyday. Again, not enough details to really know here. Personally, unless OP called CBP and the airline herself through their public numbers, I am not convinced she talked to them. Another very common situation where luggage goes through customs and is transferred by the airline is when the luggage was delayed on one of the previous flights of the journey. Lost and found was a great job in college.
  17. Where in the world is Carmen Santiago? vibes.
  18. It doesn't make it to the belt, it's transferred on the tarmac/luggage hold area. Anyway, luggage is only one bit of this story.
  19. Luggage is labeled to destination and transferred by baggage handlers. It's not frequent, but I've seen it. Job in college was at the airport lost and found. Things happen in the weirdest way sometimes 🤷‍♀️
  20. It happens. Shouldn't happen, but mistakes happen. Airlines do mistakes, customs and immigration also. In this case, who knows. Whole thing is sketch.
