K-1 Visa from Canada

We are getting close to submitting our i129f package, and I'm curious how long the process time will be? If the package was submitted before may, and everything goes according to plan, how long should it take till I am able to move in with my fiance?

A K-1?  The time will be close to the time a spousal visa would take.

Every couple has their own priorities, and each couple must decide which visa is better for their situation.

K-1        
    More expensive than CR-1    
    Requires Adjustment of Status after marriage (expensive and requires a lot of paperwork)    
    Spouse can not leave the US until she/he receives approved Advance Parole (approx 6-8 months)    
    Spouse can not work until she/he receives EAD (approx 6-8 months)    
    Some people have had problems with driver licenses, Social Security cards, leases, bank account during this period    
    Spouse will not receive Green Card for many months (up to more than a year) after Adjustment of Status is filed.
    A K-1 might be a better choice when 18-21 year old children are immigrating also
    In some situations, marriage can affect certain Home country benefits, making a K-1 a better choice   
    A denied K-1 is sent back to USCIS to expire
    

CR-1
    Less expensive than K-1    
    No Adjustment of Status(I-485, I-131, I-765) required.    
    Spouse can immediately travel outside the US    
    Spouse is authorized to work immediately upon arrival.    
    Spouse receives Social Security Card and Green Card within 2 or 3 weeks after entering the US    
    Opening a bank account, getting a driver's license, etc. are very easily accomplished with GC, SS card, and passport.
    Spouse has legal permanent Resident status IMMEDIATELY upon entry to US.

With the current processing time of 15.5 months, about 17-24 months from start to visa in hand. Although keep in mind that it is different for everyone and will also depend on the consulate backlog in your home country. As some people will also suggest, i highly suggest the spouse visa if you are okay with getting married sooner! It has more benefits than a K1 and it takes about the same time! Good luck with everything, it will be worth the wait 😁

Slower than CR-1. Get married online, meet, file I-130

Sending you the patience you need. We submitted Dec 2021, and received our first approval Feb 2023, have yet to hear from the NVC that they received.

As one Canadian to another, follow CrazyCat's advice, get married and file a CR1.  You stand to lose a lot of independence you're accustomed to if you file for a K-1 and it's a far more expensive, arduous process.

Expect not to have the visa until two years from filing the petition.
