I love Berkeley, too!  My oldest graduated from Cal last year.  Wish I could afford to live in the Bay Area.

Plenty places in SF and the wider Bay Area money can keep you away from the homelessness and crime. It just requires a lot more money than most other cities. For those who are not benefiting from the boom industries, it can be a real trial. One of my uber drivers once was doing it to earn some extra income..and he was on the academic staff at Cal. That’s pretty scary.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I totally agree! Just having lived both here and in the LA area (Pasadena and Burbank to be precise), it seems like it took a lot less for me to (unintentionally) live in a bubble where human misery didn't come very close to touching me. Up here, the pointy edges of how we have failed as a society to take care of our most vulnerable and ill (mentally and otherwise) are easier to bump into. I love it here -- it has been a fresh start for me in a beautiful part of the world.

But I can't help but think what our money could get us somewhere else. I live in a funky little studio that would cost an arm and a leg if I didn't have a break on rent (family friend owns it), and my fiancé's place... hoooooo boy. You'd think for the rent he pays (about $4000, which makes my stomach clench just to write it) the place wouldn't have walls thin enough to hear what is happening next door late on a Friday night...🤮 I know way too much about his neighbor's preferences in nighttime activities if you catch my drift. Back in Burbank, before I moved up here, I had a decent 1 bed for half that. Then again it was Burbank and not SF -- not exactly a perfect comparison!

China is officially the least religious country on earth. I lived there for a year. You might like it. The United States is more religious than most of Europe. Don’t believe everything you see in films.

I got to admit homelessness in sf was alarming,  i saw 1 person in new york and about 15 in sf. Felt sorry for them being a considerate born carer.  Thanks for the constructive advice from a few of you. How do i delete this post or close it.

Only 1 in new york?  Must have been a short stay.  I'll request your post closed

There are over 8,000 in SF and that is a pretty small area.

Only 1 in NY???  Guess it must have been one of the "nicer" areas you were frequenting.

I see them all the time depending on what area of Manhattan I'm in.  Queens, not as much, but they are there as more homeless shelters are being put up now to try to provide services/temporary shelter them in the boroughs.

Gosh, riding the subway I see at least half a dozen there nearly daily during my morning/afternoon commute.
