In-Laws Coming To US

Hello everyone, wanted to get your thoughts on this topic because I have been getting mix information from online search. So my wife will be applying for citizenship later this year and of course once she is a citizen, she will be apply for her parents to come over to the US. My question is that once my in-laws are in the US, what benefits will they qualify for? Do they have to work or if they are close to retirement age that they will get some benefits? Of course they will be Green Card Holders and maybe later they can apply for US Citizenship as well. So I just wanted to know what can they expect for Financial and medical support?

They will not qualify for Medicare unless one of them accumulates at least 40 quarters of qualifying work. After 5 years as an LPR they can buy into Medicare but it will be expensive.

They will not qualify for any means-tested benefits for at least five years and if they are not citizens you could be sued by the government to pay the money or costs of services back.

They will not qualify for social security unless one of them has 40 quarters (10 years) of qualifying work.

I think they could qualify for Medicaid.

You can check with Medicaid on when and how they may be qualified.

If you are bringing your parents at their retirement age who would never work in US for at least 10 years, it is your responsibility to take care of their expenses.

If you can't afford the high costs of medical here, perhaps you should rethink your plans of bringing them over.

Read the I-864 instructions for the benefits they can not receive. If they receive them, the I-864 sponsors will be liable for repaying the benefit.

I believe after they (parents) become US Citizen, the affidavit of support no longer applies.

I know a few people who have not brought their parents over precisely because of high age related medical costs. And where I come from there is a shame attached to being on welfare/benefits.

It upsets me that I've have paid into SS since I was 16, have many years to go, and am always told I'll be lucky if its still around for me to collect when I retire. Yet, some who have never paid into it collect....JS. Sorry need to get that off my chest...rant over.

Judging from the opening post it will be circa 2 years before any move.

I have no idea how it works in India but in the UK you would have your Pension whatever paid and can then transfer it.

As far as the US is concerned then you would buy through the Exchange like anybody else. You could get an indication now, will be no doubt more expensive in a couple of years.

In Colorado you have to be a PR for 5 years to be eligible for Medicaid, Medicare as has been said is 5 years and then you have to buy into it.

This is one of the many reasons the middle class is quickly disappearing. People expect to be taken care of

for free. OP, if you cannot afford to take care of your in laws, then maybe you should not bring them here.
