1. FBI do most certainly leave business cards with please contact written on the back on doors at times. Not a theory. Security Clearances for friends, family, neighbors, neighbors friends, neighbors extended family, etc. etc. or otherwise questions about some matter of interest to them.

2. Stop Making it Complicated. OP should lookup and call local FBI field office and mention the note. It is normal enough that a party want to verify agency credentials.

Make a phone a call.

Yep, just have your mom call, or you call the local FBI field office to check on the legitimacy of the letter. Simple.

The sequence is very illogical for FBI to be doing any type of background check

and interviews...just after they cleared the security for US visa. So I would tend to

think that it is probably just a prank or a scam.

In either case, it's important that you call FBI to confirm if they need to talk to you

or simply to report this prank/scam.

This is veering off topic but:

1. Government security clearances are not done by the FBI. They're almost always done by government contractors via OPM (office of personnel management, basically the federal government's HR agency). There are a few exceptions, but those exceptions (such as the CIA) do not use the FBI.

Hey, guys!

My fiance is coming to the US on K-1 next week! My mother called me and told me that the FBI left her a letter on her door. It said something like this: Ma'am, we are contacting you in regards to a foreign person who has been granted trust with the US government. If you could contact us so we can ask you some question please contact."

Is this legit? Why would they do that if he's already approved? Has anyone else had anything like this happen?

Do not contact the phone number on the letter. Dial 411 and contact an operator to put you through to the nearest FBI branch. Then speak to a real agent to see if it's true.

I highly doubt that the FBI would leave a letter at the door.

Either a joke, or something more serious. I'd call teh real FBI and report this.

If legit, they would let her know. Of course, don't call/contact the number left in said letter

Ask to see this letter yourself. I knew someone who had a relative who wasn't too thrilled about another family member marrying a foreigner, and she pulled some rather messed up stunts. This sounds very much like the sort of BS she was pulling. I doubt there was any such letter left on her door at all.

It isn't complicated & it isn't about business cards. The FBI doesn't leave letter taped to doors nor use that type of language to describe the problem.

The military and the federal government use the FBI to do background checks on people who are seeking secret or top secret clearance and also government employment. My husband had to have a 1 hour interview with the FBI before being granted his job at the FAA. Someone else there had a 3 hour interview because people didn't mail back the questionnaires that were sent to them to verify his identity.

I'm glad someone followed up on this. It's not normally for a letter to be left like that instead of in a mailbox, but it's good to follow up even though it may have been a scam. At least that way it would have been reported as such.

Hey, guys! Thanks for the help! It turned out being real but it wasn't for my fiance, it was for my brother's friend's military clearances. :P

This is certainly a relief for you -- glad to hear it.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
