Our Story

  1. Hello. Help me please, We married on Jan 14 2019. I got my marriage based 2year green card on Sep 08 2020. I applied I-751 on Jun 2022 and it’s still pending. what date can I apply for N-400 citizenship?
  2. Hello wonderful people! I have applied for N-400 through mail a week back and still waiting for receipt notice. I am applying through the 5 years rule. My last biometric was done back in Apr 2017 as part of green card process. If you had applied as part of 5yrs rule, did USCIS reuse your biometrics or scheduled a fresh appointment? Any idea how USCIS decided to resuse biometrics? Thanks!
  3. Hello, I’m in between filing N-400( under 3 year rule)online or mail filing. Those who filed N-400 ( under 3 year rule), which way seemed better? if possible please share your timeline from I-751 to N-400. thank you.
  4. Hello, I have a question about the 3 year rule timeline. So I arrived in the US in Nov 2019, but due to pandemic, paperwork got delayed for a year and I didn’t get my 2yr GC til 2021. I’ve submitted my I-751 to remove condition already. I’m wondering if I can submit N-400 now while waiting so they can do the joint interview. I have all the paperwork ready (since I prepared for the I-751) and met all the requirements. Because technically I’ve been in the US for more than 3 years, but if according to the date on my GC then it’s not 3 years yet so I’m not sure if I can do that
  5. Hello! I received my naturalization certificate yesterday! I am now a dual Canadian/American citizen!!! I feel like I keep reading and hearing some conflicting information on passport etiquette. Since I am residing in the USA- do I leave and enter the states (when I am going to visit Canada) on my USA passport? Could I use my Canadian one? I feel like they would wonder why I am living in the USA and using my Canadian passport with no greencard? My other question is that I really want to be able to go home for Christmas. I’ve heard that if you have travel within 14 days you can get an emergency passport appointment and sometimes get a same day passport… But how do I book my flight when I don’t have an American passport yet? I’ve heard that you must leave with the same passport you enter with? I’ve heard I cannot leave the country until I have my new passport even though I have my Canadian one? When I am flying do I need to bring both passports?
  6. All, I searched Google and the VJ forum but everything recent is about the 3 year rule for N-400 “Additional evidence you may want to provide” section. My wife and I have been married for 7 years in two weeks and she is now applying for her citizenship. We are doing it under the 5 year rule as it seems less is required and it was suggested to do so on a recent post in a different thread. The question is: what, if any, evidence should be put in this section with the 5 year rule in mind? Our two kids birth certificates are already uploaded, marriage certificate is uploaded, all other required documents. Is there anything else that may assist her with good standing or expedition or anything? Example: I served in the army for the last 10 years. Does my honorable discharge paperwork look good for her application? Proof of her working and going to school to show she is a productive member of society? Or am I overthinking this and there is nothing else really needed since it is not the 3 year rule? Thanks!
  7. Hi All, I had an interview back in October 2022 and it went well (approved). I should have waited but did a name change request there. The officer told me I'd need to go to court for the oath change and he set up all for me. And also he mentions that if I do not hear back within 3 months, I'd need to contact USCIS because it is out of normal processing time. Does anyone have similar experience? Anyone requested a name change in 2022 and still waiting? or approved?
  8. I have my interview in 2+ weeks and wondering if it speeds up process for the IO if I proactively upload the 4 years of IRS transcripts and 5th year of tax returns as additional evidence? I will carry with them but if the IO is gonna ask for, why not upload ahead? Also, did anyone got asked for when applying with EB5+? TIA
  9. I still have about a year before I'm eligible to apply for citizenship. I want to change my name when I do as my name is such a hassle here. My name is Ma. Elena. The Ma. stands for Maria, that's the way it's written in my birth certificate but uscis, the bank, anywhere really, does not allow punctuation so I end up having to leave it as Ma and get called Ma in all these places as they don't know that it means Maria and that Elena is not my middle name but part of my first. I've never even used the name Maria in my life so it's extra confusing to me. (Can I just leave it out in certain documents? I'm worried about not putting it in as it's my legal name) When I change my name I want to completely drop Ma. and possibly make Marie my middle name as a way to keep it. (I don't want to change it to long form Maria as I have a sister who actually has it written as a full Maria in her birth certificate and goes by that here now too as she gets called that all the time) That would make me Elena Marie. Is that a legal name change? I've also read some posts here that name changes make n400s delayed sometimes? Would it still be worth it to apply a first name name change this way or should I do it as a court filed name change before or after any oath ceremony that will take place? Many thanks all, -not Ma
  10. Hello. My wife is Canadian with an IR1 here in the US for over 10 years. We're starting to work on the naturalization process for her to become a citizen. We're working on the form online, most of it seemed easy to us, until we got to the travel history part. As many of you I'm sure know, you need to provide the past 5 years of international travel history. We're Nexus card holders and do land border crossings in the Buffalo, NY area quite regularly to see family on the weekends. Well, we don't keep a log of that. I called around on the Canadian and US side. Canada tells me there's no way. US told me to start a FOIA request. Is that the best way to get this? I wanted to check here before I went down the FOIA path. I saw there's an I-94 form online but the border guard on the phone said that's not what that is for. Thanks
  11. Hey all, I'm about to file my N-400 application but I'm curious to know how other people counted their travel days. The instructions say to count how many days you were outside of the US for over 24 hours -- so, does that mean we don't include "travel days?" (ex. If I took a flight at Noon from New York to Canada, does that "day" count toward my total?) I've made ~10 trips out of the US in the last 5 years, so whether or not I include my travel days will change my total count by 20 days. Thank you!
  12. Hi guys! So I had my interview today for n-400. Everything went well. After the interview, the officer said I was very passable but he is unable to make a decision as he does not have my pending I-751. He said my I-751 case is in Nebraska. He said he will request for it. He said two things will happen, either he will receive it and he can approve it, OR they may approve it in Nebraska. has this happened to anyone else? How long does it normally take? Thanks!!!
  13. Asking for a friend: Does Oklahoma City have the same day oath after the interview?
  14. I am kindly seeking assistance from the forum on how to go about my situation as I am preparing my N-400 application. On reviewing the N-400 form I noticed the question below which will be a "Yes" for me: “Have you called yourself a “non-U.S. resident” on a Federal, State, or local tax return since you became a Permanent Resident?” My 2018 tax return was filed with Form 1040-NR (Nonresident Aliens). My CPA used same form (Form 1040-NR) that he has used for previous years returns before I became LPR. It was part oversight and part ignorance of appropriate tax filling form. I have filed an amended Form 1040 for 2018 which is pending to be processed by IRS. There was no tax benefit on filling with Form 1040-NR as oppose to Filling with 1040, it was a mere mistake and partly ignorance. Some Background Information: I own rental properties and have been filing returns on rental income using Form 1040-NR since 2014. I got my IR1 on 01/06/2018 I became eligible to apply for naturalization on 10/08/2022 (using 5 years rule and 90 days to 5th anniversary of becoming LPR). I have NOT applied yet. Filed amended return for 2018 using Form 1040 (IRS processing still pending) No difference in tax benefits for both forms (no refund) Only income for 2018 is from rental properties (Unemployed for the whole 2018) Does anyone have similar situation or know someone that does and may know how best to provide explanation to what I will call an innocent mistake? Are there consequences? Please let me know if you need additional information. Thank you.
  15. Hi Everyone! I applied for I-751 April 21, with my GC due to expire June ‘21. I then applied for N-400 on May ‘22, I’ve received the interview date for Nov ‘22 The I-751 has changed online to “case transferred and a new office has jurisdiction. does this mean they will be combined for my N-400 interview or will it likely be declined due to my I-751 still pending? Side question it doesn’t say on the interview notice that I need to bring my spouse but I’ve read online if they combine the 2 that he would need to be there for any I-751 related issues. thank you for any insights
  16. Hi Everyone! I booked a trip to the UK 3 months ago and just got my N-400 interview date…… it’s the morning of the day I fly! Do they take your passport? Am I still safe to fly or should I reschedule for the week after I return? Thank you for any insight!
  17. I was wondering if there is anyone here who has been through their naturalization ceremony lately and whether there were any restrictions on who you could bring with you? I know that you used to be able to bring anyone but that was pre-COVID and I'm not sure what the restrictions are now. I was hoping to bring my wife. The more recent your experiences the better. Thanks.
  18. Hello Everyone on Visa Journey, My immigration Journey - Entered USA February 2017 on a F2B visa with minor child who is now 21 years old. - Submitted N400 application online April 2022 - May 2022 Biometrics was done - August interview is scheduled - I have no criminal history in the USA or my home country - Never travel outside the USA -Filed taxes 2018, 2019, 2020,2021 and 2022 - Selective service is not applicable to me I would like to know besides my green Card, drivers license and passport what other document should I take to the interview because the letter that i received did not state anything else. Thank you for your time
  19. So I was interviewed for my naturalisation 9 days prior. The officer said he can’t make a decision on it as my I-751 filing is stuck in Nebraska. He said he will request for it. The officer didn’t hand me my paper showing I passed the English and civics test. I requested for it and then he handed it to me. He marked the box that I passed, BUT he accidentally marked the box for “Follow instructions on Form-N14, request for additional information, Documents, and Forms”. The officer did NOT hand me form N-14, nor did he say I needed anything else. He said I was very passable and will approve my I-751 once he receives it. He marked the wrong box! What shall I do? Will this slow down my case? Shall I book an infopass appointment? I’m just so so worried. Part of me thinks its malice as he didn’t even hand me the paper until I asked. Advice please!
  20. Hi all, My husband finally got the citizenship interview scheduled after over 2 years pending, for his N-400 application. It says to bring his MX passport. A couple questions: - The NOA says to bring passport, green card and any other documents used for travel. Does it matter if his MX passport is expired? The USCIS document doesn’t mention validity. (We haven’t left the US since prior COVID started in 2019 and his passport expires this month which is of course the same month as his interview. 🤦🏻‍♀️) - He wants to renew his MX passport but isn’t sure the consulate will have it renewed prior to his interview. Does he need to wait to renew it? Or it needs to be valid so he has to renew it? - Does he need the original passport he traveled with for the interview or can he provide the renewed one if it’s done in time? TIA for your help!
  21. Could you please take my application and do something with it? It has been sitting on someone’s desk for over 6 months now, I would appreciate some movement on it. Your effort is highly appreciated, Sincerely, one impatient alien
  22. Hi all! I would like to know if there is a specific contact number I can call to follow up on status of my naturalization application. Due to a pending trip, I would like to talk to an actual officer who can check my application and get an accurate estimate of when to expect the interview. I guess another important question is: is this possible? Would I be able to get an accurate estimate if I call? I applied for naturalization in August 2021 and my USCIS Field Office is in Charlotte. Thank you in advance!
