  1. Hi All, I'm currently helping my sister apply for N400, got stuck on a name part which I can't figure out an answer. The current name is "Ja ne Kim" where Ja ne being the first name and Kim being the last name. She has no middle name. She would like to remove the space and have an official name as Jane Kim. Need a bit of advice on how we should fill out the form, maybe request name change just to be safe? Confirmed that full Ja ne is entered as the first name on all her current documents (License, passport, etc.). Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!
  2. This may be a bit of a weird one, but I am at a loss as to where to go. I am a UK citizen and when I was between 5 - 8 years old my parents changed my name by deed poll. I have misplaced the original 80's document and need to get a replacement but the UK does not have a central database of name changes!!! So I am not sure where to go to get a legally binding copy of the certificate, for my K1 interview at the Embassy in London. Has anyone else ever had to show a childhood name change? What paperwork was required? All my documentation is in my current name, apart from my original birth certificate which has my mothers maiden name on. Anyone had a similar experience?
  3. Hi. I’m a permanent resident holding a ten year greencard. I recently got divorced and I petitioned for my name change which was approved and mentioned on the divorce decree. I already had my ssn, driver’s license, bank accounts, etc changed back to my maiden name except my greencard. I am eligible for citizenship on February 2019 since I will meet the 5year rule by May 2019. Should I change my greencard name now using form I-90 and pay almost $500 or should I just wait until I apply fof citizenship next year? Would there be any issues if I wait until I apply for naturalization? Please help.
  4. Hi, I'm a 10 year green card holder and recently divorce. I also have a court order of name change after divorce since I wanted to use my maiden name again. My question is do I need to change my name in my green card now or can I just wait until my naturalization? I also wanted to save some money since I know filing for i-90 will cost a lot. Hope I get some answer, advice and help. Thank you!
  5. How long does it take for USCIS to process the name change submission? PS: USCIS received the name change correspondence 30 days ago and the I130 had already five months of being filled when the name change was submit.
  6. For Canadian K1 Beneficiaries who are currently awaiting AOS and who have also undergone a name change via your Marriage on the K1 Visa what are our steps regarding our Canadian passport, updating our new name with CRA, provincial driver's license, Provincial Health Card, etc? Are we expected to be updating theses - particularly our passports? Once we get married in the US and you are taking on your spouse's last name, you are changing your actual name. Does that all of a sudden mean we need to request our passports in Canada to be updated? Or we have to wait for AOS to be approved since update our passport requires us to send our passport back to Canada for the replacement? What are the steps for this? Same goes for CRA, etc. I know we aren't really traveling or going home until we get the temporary green card but I am just trying to understand what we do/must be doing after the fact to update our official documents. Has anyone gone through this recently?

  8. Hi! New to this forum but looking for some advice on how and more specifically, when, to change my name. -I have resided in the US for 17 years and have had a green card for the past 12 -I have a UK passport that expired this month, I went to the consulate for an "emergency passport" for travel for my honeymoon this past week (expires in 6 months, but isn't technically valid for any travel now) -my green card is valid for another 8 years -I got married a week ago to a US citizen and plan to change my name to his -I was planning on applying for naturalization last year, but held off due to job changes etc SO- where do I start? Do I change my name first with social security? Apply for naturalization ASAP? Can I apply for a new British passport in my new name, which will not match my green card, and will that cause issues when I apply for naturalization? I'm going around in circles here.
  9. Hi All, My husband (from Spain) and I got married two weeks ago after his entry on a K1! So awesome. It took 11 months but we are so happy. He has not changed his name, but I took part of his name (his full Spanish last name is super long) when we filed the license. However, I still haven't done all the things I need to do, like get a new license, get new credit cards, etc. So pretty much everything is in my old name. Also, the marriage bureau in NYC wouldn't let us change our name to what we wanted (another variation of his name but the order is changed) so I may go in the summer and at least change mine to what we had originally wanted. We are thinking he'll just keep his name (it's a variation of his), as we don't want to mess anything up with USCIS. My question is: What do we put for me, the U.S. citizen, on the I-485? My original name or the changed name? Does is matter? Should we put my original so it's clear he didn't marry someone else? Thanks, Ann
  10. Hi, I have done a lot of research, but I haven't found an actual answer. I got married in August 2017 and my marriage license did not specify whether I wanted to change my name or not. I adjusted my status with my maiden name, thinking I'd be able to change my name later (apparently I was wrong). It did seem very wrong to me to complete all the forms and paperwork of my AOS with a name that wasn't approved by anyone or had any actual documentation -I later learnt that a marriage license is enough proof to go ahead and complete all your forms with your new name (in this case, taking my husband's last name). I received my EAD three weeks ago and it has my maiden name on it (which was expected). Yesterday I went to the SSN and they asked me whether I wanted to take my husband's last name, I asked if it was recommended and they said, the recommendation was that ALL my documents matched (SSN, EAD Card, DL) with the exact same name. So I just went ahead and had my maiden name again. Now my EAD and my SSN are all with my maiden name. Now I am really upset about the opportunity to change my name and take my husband's last name. HOW, WHEN, WHERE? Has someone else been through this? I wish there was more information on the name change in the USCIS forms. Thank you so much.
