Unlikely you need a lawyer although it’s your money to spend how you wish. Your situation is not at all complex or unusual. There are thousands going through exactly the same. Not one of us enjoys or enjoyed the separation but we all survived. And not one of us loves our spouse any less than you. The length of marriage has no influence on the processing time. You wait in the same line as people who married last week, and those who have been married 40 years.

What will you do if he gets sick or injured?  It is far cheaper to pay for health insurance than to pay out of pocket for medical bills as an uninsured patient.

if you think health insurance is expensive, try getting sick or being hospitalized or needing surgery WITHOUT it....

When you marry, you will probably not be able to remain on your parents plan. You are an adult. old enough to be married, old enough to figure out your insurance and how to pay for it.

SSN is not required for health insurance. You should have it before you file taxes, or you can file by paper and apply for ITIN, but you should have it by then.

Dont forget you also need to file for AOS as soon as possible after marriage. Thats another $1200 ish dollars.

    Welcome to adulthood.

Sorry I am late to your question on the other thread. Just make sure your husband has proof of domicile in case they ask. That's what you would have at interview. So his leave, proof of bank account. That's all he needs. Since you have a joint sponsor should not be an issue.

    Happy New Year.

My husband had his interview on Dec 20th and was approved. His passport with his visa arrived today and he is taking the first flight out of Vancouver in the morning. I couldn't be more excited to finally be done with this process!! 2020 will be the best year ever, since we are finally going to be together! The good thing about this taking so long is that our 2-year anniversary was a few weeks ago, so we are now IR-1 and won't have to deal with USCIS until citizenship, lol!

Wishing you all the best! Thank you for your support during this process! This site is amazing!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2020 brings lots of ILs and reunites you all with your loved ones!

Have you already submitted your financial documents to NVC and had them approved? If so, you should just bring an updated I-864 to your interview. If you haven't submitted financials and he quits first, your joint sponsor would have to have sufficient income without depending on anything your husband makes since his income will go to $0. The real problem with this scenario is that he will have to prove intent to re-establish domicile. Canada is very concerned about domicile. So, he would need to maintain strong ties to the US and show that he is planning to move back there with you on approval.

Yes, that's true! But to add onto that, your credit will not transfer.

American Express, with the help of Nova Credit, can use your international credit history from select countries to evaluate your Card application. While your international credit will not transfer to U.S. credit, it could help you get approved for a Card and responsible Card use could help you build U.S. credit history.

Many factors contribute to your U.S. credit scores, including on-time payments and the portion of your credit you are using regularly (lower utilization rates may increase your credit score). Credit scores are likely to change over time, rising or falling depending on your financial behavior here in the U.S.

All the big banks here can offer you a US credit card before you arrive in the US. I get emails all the time since I opened my RBC Bank US credit card trying to get me to purchase property in the US using my Canadian credit history. I've not looked further into that yet, but if you have the time speak to someone again at TD. You could always do a variable rate mortgage for a year if you're concerned about the rate or use their offer to get it matched by a broker in the US who is willing to use your Canadian credit history.

Either way get in touch with mortgage brokers both here and in the US.

I was able to open a TD account before I had a SSN based on my Cdn TD accounts.  I then applied for a secured credit card with TD once I had my SSN.  After 6 months i was able to lease a car based on that secured credit card and after 8 months they released the security on my credit card.  I would speak to a "good" mortgage broker where you are moving to and they will be able to coach you on how to make it happen as quickly as possible.  We have just done that ourselves.

That's not true. My husband had no credit when he came here.  I added him to my credit card and one month later he had a good credit score.  So it does help to be added as an authorized user.

You would need a ssn and be added to the account, not just an authorized user. You will also be on the bill and be just as liable as your spouse. (no big deal if you're buying a house together anyway) This is the fastest way but still takes at least 6 months to actually get it to update.

My credit history goes way back before I was even in the US. It goes back 10 yrs before I moved here as that is how long my husband had that card before adding me.

You might want to go check out the Moving Here and Your New Life forum as there have been more recent threads about house buying and problems new immigrants have had.

Adding a spouse/child/etc. to an existing secured credit card does nothing except put the original cardholder at more risk. It does not build credit for the person(s) added to the card. There is no "fast way" to build credit - that's the point of credit, which is a timeline of a person's ability to pay debts on time. Don't give money to people/businesses that claim they can build your credit quickly. They cannot. The best way to build credit is to take out a legitimate credit card (Visa, Mastercard, etc.), use it wisely, and pay on time. Buying something on a loan - auto, property, large expenditure items - and paying them on time is about the only way to build credit. Credit scores are gained over time, not necessarily amounts. That is, paying off a $4,000 loan on time is just about as good as doing the same on a $10,000 loan. There are a lot of parameters, but showing stability of income is another. Credit agencies and banks don't like incomes that go up and down. Again, don't believe anyone that says they can build your FICO score in a matter of days or weeks. Why are you in a big hurry to buy a house? Take time to fit in, get settled, and get into your job.
