Supposedly Europe doesn't want migrants now when they're being brought in by Belarus and Turkey. I guess it's only OK if Germany invites them.

Very clearly what is going on with Belarus is not legal immigration ( although the immigrants themselves may be refugees). It is an act of provocation coordinated by the Belarus "regime" ( I dont think the Lukashenko is legitimately elected and he has targeted his opponents with death and imprisonment) trying to distract from their illegitimate status by promoting illegal immigrations from poorer countries.   There is no legitimate explanation on how these folks came to be in Belarus except that the Lukashenko KGB promoted the emigration.  

 

I dont know what reference to Turkey is except the tragedy of Syrian refugees trying to leave Turkey on boats.

Turkey used a similar tactic to what Belarus did. It's said that Lukashenko got the idea from Erdogan.

It's surprising that it took so long actually. Most countries have reciprocity agreements with visas and entry rights. Why Europe was so chill about it all these years was pretty baffling. I guess they just wanted to simplify the tourism process because so many European countries have economies that rely heavily on tourism.

 

My very first trip abroad was to France and they didn't even stamp my passport. The border guard just looked at me and I held up my passport (unopened) and he just waved his hand like "OK you're good, come on in" and that was that. It could have been a stolen or fake passport and yet I was just allowed to walk right in! Crazy. When I left the country with my obvious lack of stamp (as my passport was completely blank on the inside), nobody said anything! They just stamped it and I was not even asked a single question. It was very surreal.

I think it is crazy folks are pushing back against a security loophole with paper passports and legacy paper systems.  This proposed system gives you a 3 year pass to go in and out of the country and is only an extension of slow and ungainly systems.  Checking to see if someone has entry denials, criminal history or is a risky individual is all managed at the point of entry today which is slow and imperfect.

 

 

We need to cross into Canada frequently for family and pay $50 for Five years of Nexus.  As a benefit we get shorter lines at the border a digital ID and TSA Precheck at the airport.  When we cross  in our out of the country the most frequent question we get is "have a nice day!". Very civilized.

I don't think anyone is pushing back, it's just sort of a bummer knowing there's hoops to jump through when before it was so open. People will always gripe when something used to be free and now it costs money. I actually think what Europe is doing with this makes 100% sense and probably should've been implemented decades ago.

 

At the end of the day, we're still very lucky compared to the hundreds of other nationalities that have to apply for visas just to visit Europe. It seems like the fee is only something like 7 Euros after all. They could probably raise it 30 or so and people would still pay it, so it seems very reasonable.

All I'm saying is that people have to jump through endless hoops in the name of security to enter the US... perhaps we should also get used it? Vague recollection, as it's been some time since I've been to the UK, but I think they also have a fee that we have to pay.
