Just discovered this thread.

K1 visa interview in Guangzhou: 8/26/19

K1 visa in hand: 9/12/19

POE: 9/26/19

Marriage 10/4/19

AOS filing 10/12/19 (that's the plan!)

Trying to get in before the deadline. Technically we have till the 14th, but the 14th is Columbus Day so post office is closed, and they're closed on Sunday of course too, so that leaves Saturday the 12th as the last real day to get postmarked before the rule changes.

Just want to ask a couple quick questions about "original copies" versus "photocopied/scanned copies of original documents":

  • The beneficiary (applicant)'s birth certificate (and translation) submitted with the I-485, it should be an official certified (notarized) copy, not a photocopy, right?
  • The copy of the I-797 K1 NOA2 submitted with the I-485 is just a photocopy, right?
  • I know there's back-and-forth on whether the marriage certificate is necessary for the I-765 and I-131. My plan is to include an original certified marriage certificate with the I-485, but just photocopies of it with the I-765 and I-131. That should be good enough, right?
  • The checklist in the AOS guide on VJ seems to suggest a unique G-1145 for the I-765 and I-131 in addition to the I-485, but I don't see any of the checklists VJers share on the forums listing this many G-1145s. I realize it's not even required, just optional. Does a G-1145 even do anything for those other applications?

Thanks! Good luck to everyone else out there racing to get this in by the 12th!

Photocopy of birth certificate is fine. For the interview you’ll bring the original. We submitted certified translation (not notarized) with it, since I made multiple copies in my home country in advance. However I know people who just sent copies of translation as well.

NOA1 is just a photocopy, you’re right. You do not have to send them originals unless they make a request to do so :)

That’s exactly how we did and everything went fine!

If you want to receive notifications from USCIS that they received your form, you should fill it in. Even if sometimes people do not receive notifications, I’d recommend you to attach that form.

Above your post I just mentioned that it doesn't have to be notarized. If your birth certificate isn't in English, you just need to include translation to English.

I haven't heard anyone got RFE because of not notarized translation.

A few weeks ago i read a comment some where else where someone got an REF because  the birth certificate translation was not an official one.

What do you mean by "not official one"? There's no requirement to send a translation made by an "official" translator.
Yes, many filers use agencies to translate BC, however at the same time there are a lot of couples who do not.

@CaliNY You should also file a copy of your marriage certificate with the two other forms I-131 and the I-765. I know the VJ example does not say this but this is a wise move as people have gotten a RFE for sending in only one copy. Remember the two forms are processed separately from the I-485 and could thus net you a RFE for not attaching a marriage certificate if for nothing else to support the name change. Also your application must be postmarked BEFORE or on October 14th to avoid the expanded changes and the new I-944 form.

We'll be sure to include the certificate in all packets.

Too bad we won't make the October 14 deadline. I don't think we'll have the employment verification letter in time. My company informed me today it will be another 3-5 business days.

Also, they removed the old forms for the Affidavit of Support. Only the new one is on their site.

But according to another VJer they removed the I-944 form, so that might be a good thing. I just checked indeed  they did remove the I-944 form! You just may be alright with the injunction and all. Let's hope for the best.
