Hi everyone,

My grandma passed away all the sudden this morning. Because of her passing I want to go back home so I can attend her funeral. My combo card or my green card hasn’t come in yet and I have been waiting for 212 days now. I saw that I can Expedite my case because of a family loss. Does somebody know what other documents than a death certificate I need to expedite my case? Also how long does it usually takes for USCIS to respond to the request?

Usually all you need is a death certificate but the expedition process is lengthy.

I'd call USCIS, ask to speak to a Tier 2 to give you an Infopass to request an emergency travel document.

Even then, you may not make it on time.

So sorry for your loss and the situation you are now in.

I received my combo card in the mail today! Cannot begin to explain how much relief I feel.

However, I have a question regarding AP.

I'm planning on going to visit my family in Canada on August 17th and coming home August 25th.

How does the AP work as far as being at the airport to come back home? Is there somewhere I have to go, just like/similar to when I was flying with my visa to move here?

Or do I just go through the airport like normal?

You go as normal when you go to Canada. When you coming back to USA they might take you to other room to check something, or might not. But either way you wont have any problem. Good luck :)

Okay, so I just go through as I normally would, and if they need to check something they'll pull me aside.

Thank you!

So I called USCIS today to expedite my case because of my grandma’s funeral. The lady wasn’t that friendly and hard to communicate with. She gave me a receipt number but I didn’t really understand how it works from here. She told me that they have 5 days to go over it and make a decision. Is there anything I need to know/ do now? Can I check the status of the expedition with the given receipt number?

Yes, we married and then had some problem with papers and had to wait to apply. I am not K1.

Hi B-B!

We're in the same boat. My grandpa passed away unexpectedly, 1,5 week ago. :( A day after it happened, I called USCIS and asked for an expedite process. It was 07/18 and the lady I spoke to (maybe it was the same one because she wasn't too friendly and she was definitely hard to communicate with) told me they will contact me back within 5 days, either by email or phone. On 07/22 I received an email requesting documents. On 07/23 I have faxed:

  • his death certificate and its certified English translation,
  • his medical death certificate in native language with my comments provided in English,
  • my dad's ID with the name of his father printed on it
  • my birth certificate and its certified English translation.

I decided to attach the last two documents to prove that my grandpa was actually my grandpa. I haven't heard anything back since then and decided to call USCIS yesterday (07/26) and speak to Tier 2 officer. He submitted a service request on my behalf and said they should contact me back before 08/10. The funeral has already happened this week and I have a bad feeling about my expedite request..
