Does anyone know how this would affect immigrants who are on Obamacare? I am on my husband's Obamacare (after checking with our lawyer that it would be okay, as I wasn't sure about the public charge rule, and he said yes because it's not a cash benefit). Would this affect my pending I-485 or only future citizenship? Would I need to get off Obamacare and then it would be fine? It seems kind of crazy to just change the rule that people were following and then punish them for breaking that rule?

I’m not sure if it’s true or not but my husband has been listening to news stations from back home in Russia. They are saying that it is nearly impossible to get visas and green cards under the Trump administration. He came here on a k1 and we adjusted status a year ago. We will probably start working on his second green card this December. I’ve not heard anything about this and I’m wondering if it’s propoganda (would not surprise me in the least). He’s afraid that any little mistake down to a spelling error will cost him his green card. Has anyone seen anything like this recently? I’m trying to ease his anxiety as he already has enough on his plate.

No such changes are in place. There's a recent talk of a proposal that may make it harder for a minority of green card applicants to address the public charge concern, but nothing even in place yet nor does it affect the vast majority of applicants.

I really wish people would stop misinterpreting this and going into panic mode and thinking that USCIS is suddenly going to severely restrict GC issuances without proper legal recourse. It is definitely slightly propagandist. I do not agree with the administration's attitude towards most of the current issues but with legal immigration, not a whole lot is changing. They can't really change anything anyways right now for various reasons. Mainly the backlog is so bad that many officials on both sides are focusing on trying to encourage USCIS to lower processing times (which would be great for everyone really).

Thanks guys! The hubs is my favorite little worry wart! I didn’t think anything had changed, but I thought getting the same information from someone else would help him relax.

I understand as I am the worry wart in my marriage.

A lot of this is media playing politics.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

So anyone hear about how the president is going to make it harder for legal residents to get greencards and citizenship just for using Obamacare? I only bought insurance for my wife through the exchange and it’s not a public benefit which makes no sense at all. Source is from nbc news someone fill me in.

I think most all media is biased against the trump administration,  and skews the information the report in a way to cause alarm.  If she is not getting it subsidized (tax payer funded and basically free), then you are good.

I pay about 150$ a month for i looked online and it said it would constitute as a public charge but I have no clues why the news included it among food stamp because on the aca page it says it is not a public charge benefit. I also work somewhere where insurance is free so I don’t really use it.

I pay $130 a month for my wife, and mine is not subsidized.  I think what is being considered is when non UCSs are on medicade health care, which is like medical welfare, then they would be classified as a charge. I guess, for some peace of mind, you could request from your insurance company that covers your wife, a statement (signed) that in no way does that policy use any public funds.  If USCIS  questions it, it will be on them (the insurance company) that duped you.
