Health Insurance without a SSN

Hi All,

 

Is it possible t o add my wife and kid, after we get married, to my insurance while we wait for the SSN ?  Some guide says we should wait 2 weeks after POE to apply for SSN but I want to get married the day after POE and put them on my insurance before we apply for SSN.

That's something to check with your HR. I know they now require a SSN but in the past they could use a passport number or a dummy number until SSN in hands.

I just posted about this- although it's possible, my HR isn't doing it without a SSN. I don't think it matters much in my case, but if it matters I think you can successfully push it.

SSN isn't required for insurance. You may have to go back and forth with your HR for them to figure out how to do so without an SSN (many businesses don't deal with this circumstance often), but it can be done.

 

It doesn't take 2 weeks to appear in the SAVE database nowadays...a few days should be sufficient.

I got my SSN one week after I entered the US. There's no need to wait for several weeks, go to the SSN office right away.

My wife (K-1) got her SSN a few days after coming to USA. No need to wait - it won't just come to you. Go now and get your SSN. And then ask employer the question - we don't know the answer.

You definitely don't "need" an SSN. For example H4 and O3 visa holders don't get SSNs but are usually on the H1's or O1's employer insurance. As above, it may be a bit tricky to find someone in HR to understand this though if there are not many such cases in the particular company.

Thanks for the answer, how many days did you wait before you apply for SSN ? we're not coming until this Friday.

I have US health insurance  through my wife's work benefits, i have no SSN, i'm still waiting for my green card (CR-1), at first they might tell you it can't be done, but it is possible. We've already changed insurance three times  and i've always been added with no problems.

this is not true anymore. go get the SSN right away. if you are arriving on a friday, try on monday.

Just be aware that K-2 can't get SSN before they receive their EAD card or GC card.

 

SSN number is not needed for them to get on your health insurance.

I brought my wife over on K1 this year . While we were still in Indonesia I emailed my insurance broker and added her to my health insurance. NO SSN necessary.
