Hadith teaching states: 'It is better to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle than to touch the hand of a woman who is not permissible to you'

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

It might be of interest to know that in ultra-orthodox-interpretation circles the practice of not touching or shaking a woman's hand (negiah) can be found in the similar and shared religious tenants of Judaism and quasi-Christianity, which may or may not involve the touching of a hand or even sitting next to someone of the opposite sex. What is so offensive about it though, if countries claim to have freedom of religion? If a student is very orthodox in faith you'll find they won't be shaking hands, touching someone, or sitting next to a woman as well as a variety of other things. If it is their religious liberty to keep their faith, should we be in the business of telling someone to do something that is forbidden to them? The schools sounds to me that they have decided to make an exception for orthodox students (and this should also apply to Jewish students that may attend as well and object for the same reasons) so that people not of that faith may better understand why. A Muslim official in Indonesia once landed himself in hot water for shaking the First Lady's hand. It is not so unusual a thing in orthodoxy religions to share these concepts.

So it begs the question Boiler, what exactly are you trying to say with this thread? Are you personally offended that a school would allow an 'orthodox' of any faith to not touch a woman's hand? If so, would you be more comfortable if it were a Jew or a Christian making such a 'special request' rather than a Muslim? Or would you like it blanket across the board, or only reserved for the things some people find personally weird?

It is a current event, and hot social topic.

For those with limited foresight probably of little interest.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I was once on a flight out of Bangkok.  They asked me to switch seats with a woman who had been placed next to a Buddhist monk.  They said it would violate his religious vows if he accidentally brushed up against her while leaving his seat.  I didn't mind, as an American I support freedom for people to practice their religion no matter what my personal beliefs on the matter were.  I don't see how this rule in Australia or the hadith harms anyone.

What if the rule was something like making students use the bathroom that conforms to one's biology rather than their preferred gender?  It applies here, as I don't think the Hadith recognizes gender identity, so if a genetic woman, preferred man walks into the same bathroom as this student, he would be violating his religion.

Whose religion would be violated in that scenario?

How often do you shake hands with people or brush up against them in the bathroom? Creeper.

It's a good thing there are no Muslims on VJ or any users who have a spouse coming from a Muslim country. They might mistakenly get the idea that VJ isn't a family friendly site open to all. And *gasp*, they may even discover that the Constitution really didn't mean all men are created equal.
