I remember when I had my student visa several years ago and everyone used to call me an alien and honestly it made me chuckle. The funniest was when I had to show my ID and the person viewing my ID would smile and say "ah, an alien". It's a running joke between me and my fiancé. Sometimes you've just gotta let some things go and laugh about them. I'd sooner USCIS use their already stretched time and clear the backlog quicker so I can be with my man.  

I appreciate you are trying, but why not a bill or petition to reduce the year long waits to get a GC interview, or ROC, etc?
 
Honestly I don't think it matters much. I don't feel offended by it. Just look at the refugee crisis in Europe caused by the wars in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. The news labeled them "migrants" instead of refugees. Do you want to be called migrant? Is it better than resident alien?

You are still going to be an alien, immigrant, etc and face the same discrimination if you are unlucky as before. Nobody uses the term resident alien when they try to discriminate against you, they will just call you illegal and threaten you with ICE. Also even if you become USC and you have an accent everybody will now that you are not from here, regardless what your status is. Just embrace it, it makes you unique, don't need to be assimilated. Do I work time to time on my pronunciation? Yes I do, BUT only to be able to express myself clearly to others and I am not trying to get rid of my accent. I think I am privileged because I am white and otherwise blend in and 100% for sure I had a way different immigration experience due to being white than others might had and I am not denying it, but feels like spending a bunch of money on semantics won't fix the underlying issue.

Why is it dehumanising and why would not whatever term replaces it also be dehumanising?

I mean, we are not USCs yet, so what should we be called in the meantime? Foreigners? Outsiders? I bet “still in the immigration process” doesn’t fit in the GC.
Don’t get me wrong, you do you. But a word doesn’t mean more than that. Plus, immigration is heavily backlogged. Can you imagine if we asked them to remove the word “alien” from their forms??!

We don't need a politically correct name change Petition. There are bigger fish to fry such as the issue yourself brought up. Changing the name may sooth your hurt feelings but it will do nothing to speed up cases. Waste of time and money IMHO. 

I love the idea that the USCIS staff is focused like lasers processing cases that applicants paid for, not re-writing and changing words in countless volumes of regulations, manuals, and documents.  
 
They’re self-funded by fees.  I’m not paying a dime for a single moment of activity that doesn’t involve case processing.  
 
You want this?  Pony up the funds for it yourself.

Since the following is meaning of the word, what do you want USCIS to call you if not a USC yet?
and you think they are going thru all the expense of reissuing documenting  cards to remove the "alien" part of the Alien number?

In the immigration world, there are bigger - more important - issues to resolve than semantics.

Since you love the word Alien, I guess you as Alien have no right to complain about serious of backlog then. People get treated with the way they been classified. I'm sure the same government bills that's calling to remove such words know what people like me and millions of others are calling for.   

I loved that my first green card said I was a resident alien.  
 
I’d show it to my kids and their friends and regale them with tails of my upbringing from another planet. I told them I was part of forward invasion force.  Their friends would return home to have nightmares.   
 
Seriously though, the term alien is from Latin like much of English (and thus, ironically it was probably due to an alien invasion of England in 1066 that the term made it into the lexicon). 
 
I will not be signing this petition.  It is just. a word. Get over it.  There are bigger problems like the backlog of immigration petitions that have a current priority date or that aliens have a hassle getting an SSN.

I'm really pissed off. These people coming across unchecked and I'm stressing every day about when my Fiancee can get an interview. We were scheduled last March and got cancelled.  

Since the new Admin wants to make 12 million illegals citizens in months,  where do I get a refund for all the money paid to USCIS?  (Sarcasm.)

It's been almost a year since most consulates stopped working worldwide. Imagine how much backlog they have, including those whose interviews were cancelled starting a year ago. Some people have been waiting since March of last year, whereas you got approved in November 2020. The only thing you can do is wait for your turn. 

You do realize that this will encourage illegal immigration right? He cares nothing about Legal Immigrants. Also I don't know why you think all Republicans are racists when the reality is far from that.

If anything, Nancy Pelosi and the Dems single handedly engineered the first Covid-19 bill. Republicans were too busy worshipping their master - you know who. No wonder they lost the election.

1. Get rid of the filibuster.
2. Pass the bill with a simple majority.

Also, these issues need not be in contradiction. Undocumented people in this country can be given a path to a legal status, and also the various other visa and immigration processes can be sped up. It's not zero-sum.

This would be to mollify part of his political base.
 
Perhaps some of us here remember the dead stop in processing typical petitions when the DACA program began.  All of USCIS's resources seemed to be dedicated to that.
