Consider yourself lucky you did not have any issues.
You'll get a permanent one.

ANYS reacted to Buster & Hitch in SSN with k1 visa
Hello! I am unsure of where to put this question so I will put it here! Please move if necessary.
I arrived in St. Augustine Florida on a K1 visa in late September. When I went to apply for my SSN, the employee taking my application said when I get married and change my last name, I have 90 days from my marriage date to change my Canadian (home country) passport to my married name and bring it back to the SS office for updating. This is the first I had heard of this timeline. Most people say they apply for their AOS with their married name then go back to the office when they get their EAD with the new name.
Any insight here? Changing my passport internationally, as most of you know, is a huge pain and I was hoping to do that one last. I'd been researching the SS process a ton so it was just odd to hear completely brand new instructions. Thanks!

ANYS reacted to MarryMe987654 in SSN with k1 visa
I applied for my SSN name change shortly after getting married and only provided my marriage certificate and the actual SSN card with my maiden name on it (this is per SSA personnel's advise). I am located in Pensacola, Florida, by the way.
Personally, I wouldn't want anything changed on my passport while in the middle of AOS but a recent Philippine embassy outreach encouraged me to do it (because of the convenience) and they assured that I will have my old and new passport back in 6 weeks and that's plenty of time before my AOS interview. So that solved my dilemma about messing with my passport.
Anyways, I haven't heard of that timeframe on changing passport name. That felt unnatural because SSA should not have a say on what name is on your passport. If you were granted the SSN in your maiden name, then the marriage certificate should suffice.
Just my two cents.

ANYS reacted to d3adc0d3 in recommended update information for SSN application
I feel the need to add to this, if you all don't mind.
It is highly recommended that anyone who is coming in on a K1 visa to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) before their marriage.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) Agents are easily confused by the K1 Visa, and may (wrongfully) assume that now that you're married, you're no longer a K1 visa holder, and no longer qualify for a SSN. It is best to apply for a SSN in the name which is on the immigrant's I-94 and passport to avoid this potential headache and several trips back & forth.
With the I-94 going electronic, there is also no need to wait anymore. Their systems are updated instantly the moment of Point of Entry (PoE).
When we applied for my husband's SSN we waited 4 weeks to hear from them about the issuance, and got a letter in the mail informing us it is being mailed and will arrive within 2 weeks, so I would also advise people to anticipate a 4-6 week wait, until it's in your hands.

Good information, dburnt. I've moved this to the Social Security Numbers forum. I'll see about getting it pinned so it remains visible at the top of the thread.

ANYS reacted to AGF in Questions about AED, Form I-765
Hi guys.. due to my procrastination ( yep, my bad ), I applied for an SSN last week ( I-94 expires Dec 8 ) and of course I got their “ manual verification “ letter .. my questions are:
1. on my AED form page 2 Part 2 question 14 ( do you want SSA to issue you a Social Security card? ) I am leaning towards a No since I already applied for one, although I know it will be rejected due to a nearly expired I-94.
2. If I do choose No, should I include the manual verification letter that SSA gave me? Would it have any impact at all?
3. if I choose Yes, would it mess up my initial application ?
appreciate your thoughts guys thanks.. and yeah, I’ve already beaten myself up for not applying SSN at least a month before I-94 expiration 😒😞

It is always recommended to get it before you get married in the maiden name. Once you have that it is very easy to get it changed once you have the marriage certificate

ANYS reacted to Nora&Jobany in Applying SSN
I am holding a K1 visa, got married about 2 months ago, applied my SSN about 3 weeks ago. However, I have received a letter saying the SSA cannot issue a SSN to me because
"The DHS is unable to verify the immigrant document you submitted as evidence of your lawful alien status"
What does that even mean? The documents I submitted were K1 visa and valid I-94.
Can anyone please give me some advise what I should do now?

The new rule is currently blocked by the courts. Old rule still in place until further notice.

@CaliNY You should also file a copy of your marriage certificate with the two other forms I-131 and the I-765. I know the VJ example does not say this but this is a wise move as people have gotten a RFE for sending in only one copy. Remember the two forms are processed separately from the I-485 and could thus net you a RFE for not attaching a marriage certificate if for nothing else to support the name change. Also your application must be postmarked BEFORE or on October 14th to avoid the expanded changes and the new I-944 form.

Do it before you enter! Much easier in my opinion and possibly cheaper.

ANYS reacted to ineedadisplayname in apply vaccines before the k1 visa interview or after in EEUU
If you know that you need new vaccines for sure then do it before the medical in your country. Most likely it is much cheaper...
In the US you need to find an USCIS approved doctor + vaccination.
I paid $180 for a MMR + preparing the I-693 last year
